The George Mason University, University Life Division invites applications for the open position of Assistant Director of Student Involvement for Fraternity and Sorority Life. Position Responsibilities: The Assistant Director of Student Involvement for Fraternity and Sorority Life is an administrative faculty position that reports to the Associate Director of Student Involvement for Fraternity and Sorority Life. As part of the professional staff of Student Involvement, this individual will work collaboratively with other departmental staff, which includes three other Assistant Directors, a Marketing Coordinator, Business Manager, Office Manager, three Associate Directors, and the Executive Director of Student Involvement. The successful candidate should be able to manage multiple tasks, have an ability to connect with a diverse range of students, and express a true passion for Student Affairs work.

The Fraternity and Sorority Life (FSL) Cluster is responsible for the oversight of the FSL community comprised of 1800+ members, 40 organizations, four governing councils (i.e., Interfraternity Council, National Pan-Hellenic Council, College Panhellenic Council, and the Multicultural Greek Council), and Order of Omega honor society. This position requires evening and weekend work. For more information about Student Involvement, please refer to http://si.gmu.edu/.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Directly advise 2 of the 4 governing councils (National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC), College Panhellenic Council (CPH), Interfraternity Council (IFC), and Multicultural Greek Council (MGC); and co-advise the Presidents Council;
  • Provide advisory support and oversight to assigned FSL organizations through the offices cross-council advisory model;
  • Supervise, train, and develop one Graduate Assistant;
  • Coordinate and provide support for recruitment/intake and expansion processes for 2 governing councils;
  • Oversee community-wide civic engagement programming;
  • Coordinate the FSL Peer Educator program, workshops focused on bystander intervention and hazing
  • Work with governing councils to plan and implement National Hazing Prevention Week Programming
  • Develop and facilitate workshops and trainings including but not limited to: risk management, scholarship and academic support, social programming, values-based leadership, group dynamics, conflict management, etc.;
  • Oversee all areas of marketing and communication for the FSL area (including Web site, marketing materials, and implementing a communication plan with students and stakeholders);
  • Compile and distribute academic reports for individuals and organizations recognized by FSL;
  • Monitor the academic progress of organizations, and design programs to encourage scholarship within the FSL community;
  • Provide support for general FSL programs (e.g., Glance into Greek, Officer Training Series, FSL Leadership Retreat, NPHC Step Show, Greek Week, Standards of Excellence, etc.);
  • Serve on Welcome2Mason Committee;
  • Serve as a resource for faculty and non-campus advisors to Greek Letter organizations;
  • Assist in the planning and implementation of department and university-wide involvement opportunities; and
  • Assist with major department programming efforts as needed.


Required Qualifications: * A masters degree in college student personnel or a related field is required; * Significant professional work experience in fraternity and sorority life activities; * Genuine passion for working with college student development; * Ability to work as a team member in a high-energy, progressive and diverse department; * Demonstrated commitment to diversity and the practice of open and effective communication with students, faculty and staff to build and maintain collaborative relationships; Preferred Qualifications: * Demonstrated experience in advisement and leadership development of students and student organizations, event management, and risk management education; * A minimum of two years of professional work experience in fraternity and sorority life activities; * Proven skills of flexibility and adaptability to change; * Strong public speaking and interpersonal skills; and * Successful candidate must be approachable, able to manage multiple tasks, and meet deadlines
