The Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) is the science operations center for several NASA missions, including the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), the most famous space observatory in history. We also lead the science and mission operations for the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), planned to launch in 2021.

Our Commanding Team is seeking a Systems Test Engineer to join the team that that develops the onboard software to drive science operations for the JWST. Your role and responsibilities:

A Systems Test Engineer in this role is part of the JWST Operations Scripts Subsystem (OSS) Test Team and is responsible for testing the onboard software that will direct science and engineering operations on the JWST. The Commanding Team implements and tests the event-driven operations of the telescope. Testing requires close interactions with the OSS development staff and the ground system software engineers, as well as interfacing and collaborating with STScI’s Flight Operations team and external partners.

  • You will work with many aspects of test preparation, test readiness reviews, test procedure execution and test results reporting
  • You will become knowledgeable about scientific spacecraft operations from proposal submission through onboard execution
  • You will become knowledgeable in the operation of the JWST science instruments and spacecraft
  • You will develop science operation products to test onboard script execution on flight hardware and on high-fidelity simulator systems
  • You will develop tools and applications to support testing

Your Qualifications and Job Requirements: 

You are typically eager to learn and grow in your career, demonstrate great versatility and teamwork. You are a creative problem-solver with strong analytical, verbal and written communication skills with a  team player mentality. Your schedule is flexible, making you available to support some off-hours and weekend testing campaigns and rehearsals, when necessary, and during commissioning of the telescope science instruments after launch, with the possibility of some travel.

We are looking for applicants with experience with the following:

  • Designing and executing tests to verify software requirements, especially for end-to-end testing of software systems
  • Working knowledge of JavaScript or Python or other programming languages
  • Control and data acquisition systems related to sensor instrumentation, such as imagers or spectrometers is desirable
  • Using Configuration Management systems, version control, problem ticket reporting and processes
  • Scientific instrumentation command and control functions, including but not limited to ground observatories, spacecraft, aircraft and/or satellites, is desirable
  • Analytical troubleshooting and problem solving and writing and maintaining documentation

You should have a Bachelor of Science degree or higher degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Astronomy, Physics, or a related technical or scientific field, and a minimum of 5 years of recent experience in software engineering and/or systems testing. Substitution of additional relevant education or experience for the stated qualifications may be considered. The starting salary is commensurate to your education and experience.

Candidates must be a US citizen or Permanent Resident for qualification for ITAR clearance.
