The Therapeutic Nursery Program (TNP) is a specialized preschool program that focuses on the social and emotional development of children, ages 3-5, who are coping with social-emotional and behavioral difficulties that place them at risk for school failure. Children display a range of difficulties that include: hyperactivity, sensory processing deficits, excessive fears and anxiety, peer problems, depression, and aggressive behaviors. Many children have also experienced trauma related to: illness, abuse, divorce, and other early losses. The TNP is seeking a teacher's aide to work in a classroom in Rockville, MD to support these children and their families.

The Teachers Aide:
•\tWorks closely with the TNP lead teacher in the development and preparation of materials needed for classroom use.
•\tProvide individual and small group instruction to children.
•\tAssists the lead teacher in the implementation of therapeutic strategies for the children in the program.
•\tSupports children in the classroom who may be in crisis. Provides physical support, utilizing Nonviolent Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI), including the Children's Control Position, when safety risks arise.
•\tAccompanies the van driver and children who are transported from their homes or daycares to TNP at the start of the day, providing regulation and support.
•\tAble to work effectively as a member of an interdisciplinary team and participates in reflective supervision.
•\tAssists in the preparation and clean-up of the classroom as per the needs of the curricular task and the needs of the children in the program.
•\tParticipates in weekly multidisciplinary team meetings.
•\tContinues professional education in early childhood education or a related discipline by attending internal and external workshops, conferences and trainings.
•\tMaintain professional boundaries with children, families, and colleagues.
•\tPerforms other duties as assigned by the lead teacher and program director. In the teacher's absence, the teacher aide may assume the role and responsibility of the lead teacher as discussed in advance.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Characteristics:

•\tKnowledge of early childhood development.
•\tStrong written and verbal skills.
•\tAble to create and develop developmentally appropriate lesson plans.
•\tAble to maintain confidentiality.
•\tAble to handle conflict resolution and crisis management.
•\tStrong time management skills.
•\tStrong interpersonal relationship skills.
•\tAble to work on a multidisciplinary team.
•\tStrong problem solving, critical thinking, and creativity skills.
•\tAble to concentrate on work amid distractions such as noise, conversations, and foot traffic.
•\tFlexibility in order to meet student and classroom operating needs.
•\tAble to able to physically perform Crisis Prevention Intervention to maintain safety and welfare of children and staff.
•\tAbility to maintain self-control in volatile/hostile situations, e.g., when being verbally and/or physically confronted by a student or family member.
•\tAble to set therapeutic limits and maintain therapeutic distance with students.
•\tAble to maintain therapeutic boundaries with children and team members.
•\tAble to address and prioritize multiple task demands within established time frames.
•\tAble to use PC (Windows, E-Mail, Internet), telephone, copy machine.

Qualifications:
The position of teacher aide requires a minimum of bachelor's degree in education, child development, psychology or other related discipline. Basic knowledge of child development issues is required.
Work Schedule:


Monday - Friday 40 hours each week.
