As a Range Manager, you will manage the daily administrative and operational functions of the range, including organizing, conducting and supervising safe live fire training activities, range safety, range maintenance, range communications and operations.

Range Manager

Serves in the Police Department of the Office of Public Safety and is assigned to the Firearms Training Facility WFO/FAM located at Washington Dulles International Airport.

Maintains and enforces the range Standard Operating Procedures (SOP's). Perform continuous training on SOP's and firearms safety and ensure the safety of all team members. Provide range orientation for new police officers. Oversees Police Department personnel (Corporals) assigned to the Range. Performs other duties as assigned.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Ensures strict adherence to range Standard Operating Procedures.

Evaluates conditions on the range at all times, making adjustments as necessary.

Schedules and monitors all activity on the firing lanes at all times.

Oversees Police Department personnel (Corporals) assigned to the Range.

Ensures instructor and officer safety at all times. Immediately ceases any behavior that could be considered unsafe.

Maintains employee qualification scores, prepares reports as necessary or when directed.

Ensures that all instructor certifications and re-certification requirements are met.

In conjunction with the training staff develops, evaluates and provides instructional programs.

Remains updated on all Department of Criminal Justice Standards (DCJS) training standards and all new implemented policies and procedures.

Ensures strict compliance with accreditation standards.

Ensures the facility and all operations are maintained at the highest standards.

Works directly with Risk Management to ensure that the range is in compliance with OSHA and EPA regulations.

Ensures use of personnel protective equipment (safety glasses and hearing protection).

Ensures adequate numbers of fully trained firearm instructors are scheduled to support range operations.

Opens and closes the range and performs end of day secured inventory shelving.

Establishes Range budget priorities and manages budget once approved. Orders supplies as needed ensuring adequate supply of ammunition, weapons cleaning materials, maintenance supplies, parts, targets, etc. are on hand for training.

Performs, monitors, schedules and tracks all repairs, cleaning and routine maintenance on the target system, firearms and facility.

Investigates all unintentional discharges and all injuries at the range. Develops and recommends corrective action to prevent recurrence.

Ensures the facility and range is sanitary and neat and maintains general upkeep.


QUALIFICATIONS

A citizen of the United States of America.

At least 21 years in age.

Three years of experience in direct Firearms Range management with military, law enforcement or private range experience.

Knowledge of laws and regulations regarding firearms, police training and pertinent state laws and ordinances.

Skilled in the use of handgun, rifle and shotgun operation and safety.

Knowledge of range operations, safety, emergency response and range SOP's.

Ability to analyze data and information and respond appropriately.

Skill in using a computer and modern office suite software.

Ability to work under pressure and maintain emotional self-control.

Ability to speak and write effectively.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Associate's Degree (or higher) in Police Science, Criminal Justice, Administration of Justice or related field.

Virginia DCJS General Instructor and Firearms Certification.

Range Safety Officer Certification.

Firearms Armorer Certification.


EDUCATION

A high school diploma or a Certificate of General Educational Development (GED).


CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES REQUIRED

A state driver's license in good standing.

Must have a Virginia DCJS General Instructor and Firearms Certification with six months of date of hire.


NECESSARY SPECIAL FACTORS

The incumbent is subject to one-time and recurring training, certification and other requirements and standards mandated by the Commonwealth of Virginia and other proper authority.

Work requires moderate physical exertion and short bursts of intense physical effort. May be required to lift, carry, or move heavy objects.

May be exposed to communicable diseases. Wears personal protective equipment as needed.

Work is typically reviewed in progress and upon completion for quality, quantity, timeliness, teamwork, customer service, and other factors.
