Basic Education Requirements: Applicants must possess undergraduate or graduate education education with a major study in interior design or other field that included or was supplemented by at least 30 semester hours in interior design, interior architecture, or interior environmental design or have taken and passed the National Council for Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ) examination.
Specialized Experience: Applicants must have a minimum of one year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility comparable to the next lower grade or comparable pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private sector.
In order to qualify at the GS-11 level, applicants must meet one of the criteria listed below:
A. I possess one full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-09 level or pay band in Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience is defined as: participating in project definition, work scheduling, contractor selection, and fee negotiation; interacting with senior management in the development, facilitation, and coordination of programming documents to acquire funding and project authorities; preparing and monitoring contracts and budgets to support interior design programs; preparing cost estimates for budget analysis, negotiation, and award of contracts and purchase orders for commodities and other services; and collaborating with team members and design leaders throughout all phases of design and documentation on a variety of project types ranging in size and complexity. -OR-
B. I possess a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree; or have completed three full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. or equivalent degree; or have obtained a LL.M. degree that is related to the position being filled. C. I possess a combination of experience and education as described in the above statement that equals to one full year of experience.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Promotion to the next highest grade level is neither guaranteed nor implied.

Graduate Education: One academic year of graduate education is considered to be the number of credits hours your graduate school has determined to represent one academic year of full-time study. Such study may have been performed on a full-time or part-time basis. If you cannot obtain your graduate school's definition of one year of graduate study, 18 semester hours (or 27 quarter hours) should be considered as satisfying the requirement for one year of full-time graduate study.
Foreign Education: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university. Work Environment: The work is accomplished primarily within an office setting. While working on site in facilities under construction or renovation, exposure to dirt, dust, and chemicals is expected and protection from these elements, for the most apart, are the responsibility of the designer.
