The Cytotechnologist screens conventional and thin layer gynecologic cytology specimens for abnormal cells using both manual microscopy and automated imaging systems. The Cytotechnologist formulates a diagnosis and reports normal findings directly to ordering providers through the laboratory information system. The Cytotechnologist forwards all cases with abnormal findings and other pre-defined findings to the pathologist for review. The Cytotechnologist screens gynecology specimens at a rate consistent with regulatory requirements and departmental workload expectations. The Cytotechnologist forwards cases flagged for quality control rescreen to the supervisor. The cytotechnologist screens non-gynecologic cytology preparations according at a rate consistent with regulatory requirements and departmental workload expectations and formulates a diagnostic impression for pathologist consideration. He or she follows procedures set forth in the Standard Operating Procedures Manual for Cytology and perform all other duties as assigned.
Work Schedule:


Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Characteristics:


  • Bachelor of Science Degree
  • CT (ASCP) Certified
  • ThinPrep Certified and CYTYC Imaging System Certified
  • Able to evaluate slides and determine specimen adequacy based on current adequacy guidelines established by the Bethesda System.
  • Able to recognize abnormal cells on the glass slide and be able to formulate a diagnosis that falls within one diagnostic category of the Bethesda System.
  • Basic computer skills to enter cytology interpretation codes/results.
