  • CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

    • SELECTIVE SERVICE: Males born after 12-31-59 must be registered for Selective Service.

    • TRIAL PERIOD: This is an Excepted Service position. This job will be filled by an alternative hiring process and is not in the competitive service. Applicants selected for an excepted service position may be subject to a one-year trial period.
    • GOVERNMENT TRAVEL CARD: This position involves travel. A government contractor-issued travel card will be issued and must be retained for official business only.
    • WRITING SAMPLE: A writing sample must be submitted with the application. 

    To qualify for an attorney position in the federal government, an applicant must have a law degree from an accredited school and must be a current member of the bar in good standing: In addition to meeting the basic requirements for the position, you must also meet the specific requirements for the grade at which you are requesting consideration.

    To qualify for the GS-13, you must have either:

    • A second law degree (LL.M) AND at least two (2) years of professional legal work experience.

    OR

    • Experience - you must have at least three (3) years professional legal work experience of a progressively responsible nature.


     To qualify for the GS-14, you must have:

    • A law degree, bar membership in good standing and at least FIVE years of professional attorney experience. 

    Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social).  Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.  You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

    Students enrolled in a qualifying degree program can apply if the anticipated graduation date is within six months of closing date of the announcement. Graduation transcript must be received before start date.

    MANDATORY EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

    In order to qualify for this position, candidates must have successfully completed a full course of study in a school of law accredited by the American Bar Association (ABA) and have a professional law degree, and must currently be a member in good standing of the bar of a State or Territory of the United States or the District of Columbia.

    Managers may exercise discretion to allow a limited amount of regular or task-based telework for this position.
