In addition to the above selective placement factor, your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-05/08) or pay band (NR-02) in the federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector performing most or all of the following duties: (1) operating and maintaining electrical, mechanical, high-vacuum, cryogenic, optical equipment and machine tools; (2) performing design or development work on fabricated devices utilizing knowledge of engineering principles, techniques, methods and precedents; (3) utilizing computer-aided machining software and computer-aided drafting software; (4) assembling, wiring, and aligning complex electro-mechanical systems; and (5) communicating with scientists and research engineers to form solutions and meet design requirements.

Substitution of Education for Experience:
Graduate education or an internship meets the specialized experience required above GS-5 only in those instances where it is directly related to the work of the position. Two full years of graduate education or a master's degree meets the requirements for NR-03.
Engineering technicians may be certified by the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies, an organization sponsored by the National Society of Professional Engineers. Certification by the Institute will be helpful as a measure of the technician's quality of experience.
