Time-in-grade/band requirements must be met by the closing date of the announcement unless eligible for special hiring authority, reinstatement eligible, non-current Federal employee applying as a VEOA eligible which do not require time-in-grade/band.
To qualify, applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-08 level (or ZT-II at NIST). Specialized experience is defined as experience with sterile technique, bacterial culture, colony plating and counting. As well as one of the following: culture of soil bacteria, automated liquid handling, fungal cultures, plate reader measurement.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

* Knowledge of a culturing a variety of diverse bacterial species on liquid and solid media
* Ability to prepare culture media formulations
* Ability to culture bacteria (particularly soil bacteria) in liquid meda, using setil technique
* Knowledge of using multiwell plates and automated liquid handling systems for increasing throughput
* Ability to plate planktonic bacteria onto agar and count colonies
* Skill in preserving bacterial stocks using cryopreservation (-80C) or lyophilization (freeze drying)
* Knowledge about bacterial mixtures and microbial consortia
