    This position is designated as Moderate Risk and requires a background investigation. Unless an appropriate background investigation is already on record with the Office of Personnel Management, you must undergo a background investigation.

    You need a degree or combination of education and experience as described below to qualify for this position.

    Biologist - You must have a bachelor's degree from an accredited or pre-accredited college or university in one of the following: biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position; OR a combination of education and experience with courses equivalent to a major, as listed.

    Entomologist - You must have a bachelor's degree from an accredited or pre-accredited college or university in entomology; or a related discipline of the biological or physical sciences that included at least 16 semester hours in entomology; OR a combination of education and experience with courses equivalent to a major, as listed.

    Toxicologist - You must have a bachelor's degree from an accredited or pre-accredited college or university in toxicology, or an appropriate discipline of the biological, medical, or veterinary sciences that included at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, biochemistry, or physiology, and 12 semester hours in toxicology.

    Industrial Hygienist - You must have a bachelor's degree from an accredited or pre-accredited college or university in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related sciences; or a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene; or certification from the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH).  NOTE:  Courses in the history or teaching of chemistry are not acceptable.

    Chemist - You must have a bachelor's degree from an accredited or pre-accredited college or university in one of the following: physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics; OR a combination of education and experience with education equivalent to one of the majors listed that included the described course work.

    In addition to the educational requirements, we are looking for at least one year of specialized experience related to this position as described below:

    To qualify for the GS-12 level, you need to have at least one year of full-time experience equivalent to the GS-11 level defined as reviewing statistical/scientific evaluations of laboratory or field research data pertaining to the use, benefits, and/or efficacy of chemicals; or reviewing the impacts chemicals have on human health. 

    To qualify for the GS-13 level, you need to have at least one year of full time experience equivalent to the GS-12 defined as evaluating scientific data or studies on the effects, benefits, and efficacy of pesticides; and making recommendations to support decisions on the registration and reevaluation of pesticides.  

    Your answers to the on-line assessment will be used to evaluate your competencies in the following areas: 1) Skill in using standard data gathering and analysis techniques to support the development of pesticide information; 2) Knowledge of laws and regulations related to pesticide registration; 3) Skill in analyzing technical documentation related to pesticides; 4) Skill in oral communication; 5) Knowledge of the uses and benefits of a variety of pesticides; 6) Skill in written communication; 7) Skill in conducting risk assessments.

    Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
