The Health Department of Fairfax County is a progressive public health leader providing services that promotes population health, protect public health and the environment, and ensure residents' access to health services and information.

Under the policy and administrative direction of the Deputy Director for Medical Services, this position provides leadership, oversight, strategic direction and supervision of the public health dental program, and pharmacy services; and provides public health direction to the Office of Emergency Preparedness and Response. Plans, organizes and directs public health emergency preparedness and response efforts for the Health Department through medical oversight of the Office of Emergency Preparedness and Response. Provides guidance and direction on emergency preparedness training, exercise and community outreach. Provides direct supervision and leadership to the dental program and pharmacy services. Responsible for program and strategic planning, resource planning, workforce development, budget, personnel management, recruitment, hiring, orientation, training and evaluation of dentists and pharmacists. Assists the Deputy Director for Medical Services in in providing guidance and support to programs within the Division of Health Services. Oversees and serves as back up for Employee Health, disability reviews and death certificate reviews. Maintains and develops partnerships with community groups, other county departments, committees, state, federal and other local health and human services organizations as appropriate.

Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Graduation from an accredited school of medicine and possession of a medical degree
approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, preferably with a master's degree in public health or a related field.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:

  • Licensed at time of appointment to practice medicine in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
  • Valid motor vehicle driver's license at time of appointment and maintained throughout employment.
  • AED and CPR certification, within 60 days of appointment.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check, a Child Protective Services Registry, a driving record check, and sanction screening to the satisfaction of the employer. Tuberculosis screening upon hire and annually thereafter. Requires a National Provider Identifier.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Preferred candidate will have three years of increasingly responsible public health administrative or supervisory experience. Experience working in a public or community health environment. Master's degree in public health is beneficial. Knowledge of general Emergency Management with experience in Public Health Emergency Preparedness and Response preferred. Ability to provide guidance and interact with employees, external partners and the public. Proven ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships; exceptional interpersonal skills and effectively communicate, both orally and in writing.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Job is generally sedentary in nature, however, job entails walking, standing, sitting, climbing stairs, reaching and bending; uses hands to grasp, handle, or feel. Visual acuity is required to read data on a computer monitor; ability to drive a vehicle. Incumbent must be able to operate keyboard driven equipment and computer. Position frequently communicates and must be able to exchange accurate information with others verbally and in writing. Employee may be required to lift up or carry up to 25 lbs. occasionally. Generally works in an office environment yet may occasionally be required to perform job duties outside of the typical office setting. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
