The location for this position will be 1801 Cameron Glen Drive, Reston, VA

The Parking Enforcement Official is a member of police department assigned to either a district station or the Police Traffic Division and is responsible for the enforcement of parking violations in Fairfax County.

Monitors, processes, determines probable cause and provides expert testimony related to all summonses for parking violations. Enforces state laws and the codes and ordinances of Fairfax County pertaining to:
  • Parking
  • Residential parking permit districts
  • Abandoned vehicles
  • Vehicle registration and inspection
  • Issues appropriate parking or warning tickets
  • Enforces chapter 110 zoning regulations as necessary
Additional duties include:
  • Responds to calls for service received through a dispatcher, by telephone, or other communications pertaining to vehicles parked, abandoned, or other violations of law.
  • Prepares clear, complete reports and submits them prior to end of tour duty.
  • Proactively seeks out parking violations and issues parking tickets as appropriate.
  • Prepares court cases in support of parking enforcement efforts and presents case for prosecution.
  • Responds to testify in court on contested cases.
  • Presents evidence and expert testimony as required.
  • Impounds abandoned vehicles in violation of state' laws and the codes and ordinances of Fairfax County.
  • Responds to all verifications of posted signs by the Virginia Department of Transportation for construction and re-paving operations.
  • Provides assistance to the Traffic Division as necessary during special assignments.
  • Supplements traffic control as necessary at accident scenes and special events.
  • Inspects the workplace during each tour of duty to ensure that equipment is working properly and that no hazards exist.
  • Implements and enforces control procedures to prevent unauthorized access to monitoring equipment and electronic evidence.
  • Provides intra-and inter-departmental training in specialized areas of parking enforcement.
  • Participates in training and retraining as necessary.
  • Complies with codes, regulations, and general orders.
  • Maintains National Criminal Information Center (NCIC) and Virginia Criminal Information Network (VCIN) criminal history release log and follows all pertinent laws and procedures as they apply to these systems.
  • Maintains uniforms and equipment in serviceable condition.
  • Keeps supervisor and the Department of Public Safety Communications advised of current status.
  • Adheres to department, bureau, and division policies.
  • Deploys variable message boards or radar/speed trailers as necessary.
  • Attends community meetings.
Illustrative Duties
  • Patrol state-maintained roadways, neighborhoods around Metro Transit parking lots and other targeted locations in an assigned police district to enforce applicable parking ordinances;
  • Investigates abandoned and unattended vehicles;
  • Removes abandoned and disabled vehicles from state highways;
  • Proactively patrols the County to identify parking violations;
  • Submits completed summonses and citations to ensure timely receipt by the violators and the courts;
  • Testifies in court on contested cases to present evidence;
  • Responds to traffic complaints;
  • Provides traffic control as requested by police supervisors;
  • Provides crowd control at special events;
  • Enforces applicable parking ordinances in and around Metro parking lots (e.g., handicapped zones and fire lanes);
  • Enforces the residential permit parking ordinance in the vicinity of Metro facilities and schools;
  • Enforces the street side parking ordinance on public roads;
  • Answers questions from and provides assistance to citizens;
  • Identifies possible criminal activity by observing surroundings and may deter vandals/thieves or summons police officers to investigate;
  • Transports and operates SMART Radar Trailer;
  • Serves as a School Crossing Guard as assigned.

  • Ability to demonstrate a high level of integrity and be truthful at all times;
  • Ability to lift and transport 40 pounds up to 30 feet;
  • Ability to walk 1/2 mile in 15 minutes;
  • Ability to present reports both written and orally.
Any combination of education, experience and training equivalent to: high school graduation or a GED issued by a state department of education.

Possession of a valid motor vehicle driver's license at time of appointment.

  • Must be at least 21 years old at time of appointment;
  • Must successfully complete background investigation to be appointed as a Parking Enforcement Official by the Chief of Police;
  • Must be able to complete Virginia Criminal Information Network (VCIN) certification within 6 months of appointment;ability to become certified as a Special Conservator of the Peace.
  • Must successfully complete a criminal background investigation and a polygraph examination prior to appointment;
  • Must have never committed, been involved in, or been convicted of, a felony or serious misdemeanor;
  • Must be of good character and reputation;
  • Must have good hearing and vision.
Must also be physically capable of exiting and entering a police automobile numerous times daily. Must have good hearing and vision.
