Collects refuse, yard waste, recyclable material, leaves and special collections on designated routes within Fairfax County. Specific duties are as follows:
  • Picks up refuse cans/containers, bagged yard waste and other materials and dumps them into a refuse truck.
  • Operates controls to activate truck component that compresses the materials. Cleans up spills and compacting equipment to prevent clogging.
  • Operates semi-automatic lifting devices that raise large containers and dumps them into the truck body.
  • Assist in clean-up activities and general maintenance of equipment and facilities.
  • Assists in snow removal at various Fairfax County facilities.
  • Performs related duties as required.
  • Maintains the standards of the county, including safety, and personnel policies and procedures. Adheres to the Department of Public Works and Environmental Services (DPWES) guiding principles.

Note: Multiple positions will be filled with this recruitment. Employment Standards MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, experience and training equivalent to completion of the tenth grade.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience in manual labor work. Some knowledge of residential refuse, yard waste, and recycling collection procedures and routes. Ability to speak, understand, and follow specific oral instructions, and communicate effectively to customers and co-workers. Some knowledge of OSHA safety rules and regulations.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
A valid driver's license is required.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
The following duties are performed with or without reasonable accommodations
  • Ability to walk, run, and bend the knees frequently.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time.
  • Ability to handle strenuous activities and repetitive motions; ability to perform duties in any type of weather conditions.
  • May be exposed to Household Hazardous Waste.

The appointee will be required to complete a criminal background check, a driving record check, and a pre-employment physical to the satisfaction of the employer.
