  • Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level or equivalent which is directly related to this line of work.

    Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience that has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position.

    Applicants applying for the GS-09 grade level must meet one of the following requirements:

    A. Have masters degree or equivalent graduate degree in computer science, engineering, information science, information systems management, mathematics, operations research, statistics, or technology management;

    OR

    B. Have a masters or equivalent graduate degree that provided a minimum of 24 semester hours in one or more of the fields identified in choice A above and required the development or adaptation of applications, systems or networks.

    OR

    C. Have 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a masters degree or equivalent graduate degree in computer science, engineering, information science, information systems management, mathematics, operations research, statistics, or technology management;

    OR

    D. Have 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a masters degree or equivalent graduate degree that provided a minimum of 24 semester hours in one or more of the fields identified in choice A above and required the development or adaptation of applications, systems or networks;

    OR

    E. Have IT related experience demonstrating EACH of the four competencies and specialized experience below:

    AND

    Have one year of experience specialized experience at the GS-07 level in the federal service which provided you with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the duties of the position. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include experience assisting senior IT Specialist with the administration, maintenance and support of Information Technology (IT) systems; hardware and software administration, maintenance and support.

    Applicants applying for GS-11 grade level must meet one of the following requirements:

    A. Have a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in computer science, engineering, information science, information systems management, mathematics, operations research, statistics, or technology management;

    OR

    B. Have Ph.D or equivalent doctoral degree that provided a minimum of 24 semester hours in one or more of the fields identified in choice A above and required the development or adaptation of applications, systems or networks.

    OR

    C. Have 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in computer science, engineering, information science, information systems management, mathematics, operations research, statistics, or technology management;

    OR

    D. Have 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree that provided a minimum of 24 semester hours in one or more of the fields identified in choice A above and required the development or adaptation of applications, systems or networks;

    OR

    E. Have IT related experience demonstrating EACH of the four competencies and specialized experience below:

    Have one year of specialized experience at the GS-09 level in the federal service which provided you with particular knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the duties of this position. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include skill in applying customer support concepts and methods sufficient to install, configure, and test software on customer workstations; troubleshooting and providing data analysis techniques and coordinating customer support activities; problem-solving and resolving customer IT issues; providing IT systems or equipment guidance and/or training to customers; and communicating effectively orally and in writing to present alternative resolutions to IT problems.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.
