The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) position works closely with clinicians and other staff members to care for patients ranging in age from pediatric to geriatric and performs a wide variety of patient care activities in an urgent, acute care setting. Responsible for but are not limited to obtaining vital signs, administering medications, and performing lab or diagnostic testing. Position is also responsible for maintaining a clean, orderly, and safe environment for patients, visitors, clients and team members. The LPN is essential in maintaining organization and facilitating patient flow to minimize wait times. Adheres to AHS policies and to all rules and regulations of all applicable local, state and federal agencies and accrediting bodies. Actively participates in outstanding customer service/patient experience and accepts responsibility in maintaining relationships that are equally respectful to all.

Principle Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Demonstrates through behavior AHC's Core Values of Integrity, Compassion, Balance, Excellence, Stewardship and Teamwork as outlined in the organization's Performance Excellence Program.

  • Performs properly and accurately documents and reports all procedures and assessments into EMR in accordance with department policy.

  • Obtains a brief summary of presenting patient's chief complaint. Evaluates for age-appropriate behavior motor skills and physiological norms of the patient. Documents vital signs, allergies, current medications, LMP and pain scale threshold if appropriate. Completes all follow-up assessments and evaluations. Assesses for signs of abuse or neglect.

  • Performs treatments and administers medications. Proficient in starting and monitoring IVs. Applies orthopedic devices and dressings as ordered. Functions appropriately in clinical emergencies. Evaluates effectiveness of interventions. Interprets and verifies physician orders correctly. Investigates questionable situations.

  • Performs diagnostic testing to include EKG, spirometry, audiometry, titmus, pulseoximetry and waived laboratory/forensic testing. Processes instruments according to current policies/guidelines.

  • Appropriately relays discharge instructions/care to the patient or family utilizing approved after-care instruction tools.

  • Participates in practice changes as a result of performance improvement activities. Demonstrates accurate documentation and monitoring of activities as needed. Supports quality standards and initiatives set by the department.

  • Follows CDC isolation guidelines, infection control practices, demonstrates appropriate use of PPE, performs hand washing according to policy and enforces safety regulations.

  • Actively participates in a wide variety of quality assurance programs.

  • May train other staff to perform waived laboratory testing and basic clinical duties to facilitate patient flow.

  • Follows all infection control policies and procedures.

  • Performs other duties as assigned or directed to ensure the smooth operation of the department or center.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Characteristics:



  • Comprehensive knowledge of current nursing practices, theories and principles.
  • Knowledge of the nursing process and social, behavioral, biological, and physical sciences as acquired through the completion of an approved practical nursing program.
  • Must display basic analytical ability as required
  • Ability to operate complete electronic monitoring equipment
  • Ability to recognize abnormal signs and symptoms
  • Ability to organize and summarize information
  • Must demonstrate independent judgment and initiative
  • Make judgements regarding patient care within scope of practice


Education and Experience Required:


  • Associate degree or Diploma in Nursing from an Accrediting School of Nursing.
  • Current licensure by the Maryland Board of Nursing to practice as a Licensed Practical Nurse
  • Current proficiency in CPR and certification required
