Assistant Director of Alumni Communications

The George Mason University, Office of Alumni Relations seeks a detail-oriented, resourceful, and highly motivated individual to serve as Assistant Director of Alumni Communications. Responsibilities: The Assistant Director of Alumni Communications is responsible for developing and managing the integrated alumni communication strategy for Office of Alumni Relations (Alumni Relations). This position ensures that alumni messaging and branding align with University standards and guidelines, and Advancement goals and objectives, working collaboratively with Annual Giving, Advancement Communications, and the Office of Communications and Marketing as well as unit advancement staff, Alumni Association and affinity partners. The Assistant Director of Alumni Communications manages all forms of alumni communications inclusive of print, social media, digital and email communications. Serves as the webmaster for alumni relations, oversees content development and accuracy, and administers editorial calendars. The position develops the Scroll (monthly alumni e-newsletter), event promotions and announcements, and comprehensive campaigns. The Assistant Director provides leadership and expertise on industry best practices, trends and metrics.

In addition to the communications responsibilities, this position participates in all Alumni Association programs and events in collaboration with Alumni Relations and unit advancement staff. Serves on key communications-related committees including Giving Day. Some evening and weekend work and travel expected.

Required Qualifications: * Bachelor’s Degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience * Strong writing ability, and experience developing written content for e-communications; and demonstrated success in gathering and using research to develop initiatives that support online content and marketing; * Experience in the use of e-communications software and tools (particularly with Web content management systems and e-mail marketing software); * Ability to troubleshoot and identify technical issues, and communicate effectively with the university’s IT and Web design professionals; and ability to communicate those issues to Development and Alumni Affairs staff in clear, easy-to-understand terms; * Knowledge of website best practices. * Strong strategic, organizational and project leadership skills; and ability to work effectively both independently and collaboratively; * Excellent interpersonal communications skills; and * Ability to work with a diverse range of individuals. Preferred Qualifications: * Master’s Degree * An understanding of George Mason University’s identity and mission, and an ability to articulate it clearly * Several years of professional experience in alumni relations, higher education, or a related area; and * George Mason University alumnus/na
