Minimum Qualifications:

Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate, and satisfactory completion of an accredited post-secondary school certification program in electricity, electronics, electro mechanics or a related field is required.  Must satisfactorily pass both a written and practical examination with a minimum score of 70 to advance to the next level.

Some knowledge of and have performed satisfactorily the duties of an electrical/electro mechanical mechanic.

License:

Possession of a valid District of Columbia, Maryland  or Virginia motor vehicle operator's license issued from jurisdiction of residence.  Safe driving record with no more than four (4) points accumulated over the past three (3) years.

Medical Group:

Ability to satisfactorily complete the medical examination for this job.  The employee must be able to perform the essential functions of this job either with or without reasonable accommodations.

Ability to perform strenuous physical tasks including frequent lifting of objects weighing up to 50 pounds and occasionally to 75 pounds.

Ability to distinguish basic colors for component, wiring and safety identification.

Job Summary/Duties:

This is rapid transit vehicle maintenance work.  An employee in this job is responsible for the inspection, repair, removal, installation, troubleshooting, testing and calibration of rapid transit vehicle electrical, electronic and electro mechanical systems and its related equipment.  The work requires an understanding of maintenance procedures and practices, electrical/electronic theory, the materials, parts, tools, test equipment and operating systems associated with WMATA rail cars and repair facilities.

ELECTRICAL HELPER   #4729

Employees are assigned elementary electrical maintenance work in a repair facility to gain familiarity with and acquire skills in repair and inspection of transit vehicles.  All important aspects of the work are subject to detailed and specific procedures which the employee follows closely.  Employees receive instruction and close supervision on new assignments, while regular assignments are performed independently.  Work is normally reviewed and verified upon completion by a Rail Car Inspection or Shop Supervisor.

Performs repairs, inspections, required adjustments testing, troubleshooting, cleaning, lubrication and scheduled maintenance on assigned rail car equipment in accordance with wiring diagrams, schematics, operation manuals and manufacturer's maintenance instructions.

Performs preventive, scheduled, unscheduled  or corrective maintenance, troubleshoots and tests all vehicle systems, subsystems and components using precision measuring equipment such as meggars and multimeters to test for defective wiring and connections; micrometers to check for excessive wear on bushings, bearings and gears; oscilloscopes and signal generators to align, adjust and calibrate circuits; and other instruments as required.  Operates special shop equipment (cranes, hoists, lifts) and uses various hand tools.

Observes electrical, electronic and electro mechanical systems and components in operation to detect potential failures or locate causes of malfunctions.                                                            

Dismantles devices and removes defective parts.  Inspects used parts and equipment for changes in calibration, dimensional requirements and manufacturer's specifications.  Tests and calibrates systems and equipment to ensure proper system operations using test equipment or precision measuring instruments.

Maintains rail car vehicle traction motors, motor generators, auxiliary motors and door operators by performing scheduled maintenance inspections and tests, removing, replacing or repairing defective or worn parts, and lubricating and cleaning bearings and bushings.

Maintains electro mechanical equipment and devices (destination signs, cam controllers, unit switches, motor controls, solenoid valves and switches) and system interfaces (trainline circuitry, electrical couplers) by performing scheduled maintenance inspections and tests, removing, replacing or repairing defective and worn parts.

Maintains electronic systems, solid state and control equipment, power supplies, amplifiers and logic boards by performing scheduled maintenance inspections and tests; removing, replacing or repairing defective components and calibrating to manufacturer's specifications using approved procedures and test equipment.

Implements Engineering Modification Instructions (EMI's) and Maintenance Service Instructions (MSI's) to rail car electrical, electro mechanical and mechanical systems.  Performs new component acceptance testing.

Completes required documentation and reports for the repair and maintenance of transit car equipment and related components by using the proper forms, tags or entering data into the Maintenance and Reliability System (MARS); requisitions parts from the supply room.

Attends on the job and formal training classes; assists mechanics in higher classifications in their assignments or provides job specific training to mechanics in lower classifications.

Responds to and provides assistance in emergencies which require movement of trains involved in incidents, accidents or derailments using rerail equipment.

Performs all tasks and assignments within the established safety practices and maintenance guidelines.

May operate Authority vehicles between work locations.

Works variable shifts, days and hours as required and as provided for under existing Union contract.

Performs all other related duties as required.
