Requirements

Director of Communications - School of Foreign Service (SFS)

The School of Foreign (SFS) was founded in 1919 as a direct response to the involvement of the United States in the First World War. The establishment of a program at Georgetown dedicated to educating students on global issues and preparing them for lives of service in the international arena reflected both the University's Jesuit heritage, with its emphasis on intercultural understanding, and its origins as an institution of the American Enlightenment, dedicated to the rights of man and the education of citizens.

The Center for Security and Emerging Technology (CSET) is focused on studying the security impacts of emerging technologies, supporting academic work in security and technology studies, and delivering nonpartisan analysis to technologists and policymakers. Initial focus will be on artificial intelligence and advanced computing.

The Director of Communications has primary responsibility for managing the Center's externally facing activities and communications. Reporting to the Center's Executive Director, the Director is responsible for:

  • Developing and leading a proactive communications strategy to engage policy-maker communities.
  • Collaborating with Center leadership to build Center brand and visual identity.
  • Monitoring emerging legislative and policy developments to inform communications and research strategies.
  • Overseeing events, including a monthly seminar series, monthly report launches, and an annual conference.
  • Advising and monitoring public communications of sub-grantees.
  • Actively engaging, cultivating and managing relationships with the University and journalists for coverage of Center projects, publications, and events.
  • Overseeing the development of print and electronic materials including project reports, annual reports, Center web pages, e-newsletters, and social media postings.
  • Developing and tracking communications and engagement metrics over time.
  • Identifying communications training opportunities for research staff.
  • Liaising with other University offices related to communications, public affairs, publications, and events.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in relevant field
  • 10+ years of experience in communications and/or public affairs roles, including 5 years of supervisory experience required (or equivalent combination of education and work experience)
  • Demonstrated experience in managing an organization's comprehensive marketing and communications strategy
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills
  • Extensive writing and editing experience with a variety of print and online communications
  • Demonstrated success in building relationships with policy staff and journalists
  • Proficiency with office productivity tools like Google Docs, Microsoft Office, etc.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and critical thinking skills
  • Motivated, enthusiastic and self-driven

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience on a communications team for a national security or technology policy think-tank
  • Experience in engaging with Congressional staff
