The Geophysical Laboratory of the Carnegie Institution for Science seeks a highly-motivated individual to join our professional support staff. The Carnegie Institution is a privately endowed institute dedicated to scientific discovery. The Geophysical Laboratory, located on the Broad Branch Road campus in NW Washington D.C., has thirteen senior scientific staff and more than twenty researchers dedicated to the pursuit of cutting-edge science in the area of Earth and planetary science, astrobiology and the physics and chemistry of materials. Professional support staff are critical to the success of the Lab and include a team of technical and administrative personnel. We are searching for a Systems Administrator/Laboratory Computing Support Staff who will undertake a range of duties as describedbelow.

 

The candidate will be responsible for providing a broad range of computing support for staff in a non-profit institution for science located in NW Washington DC. Systems administration involves responsibility for day-to-day operation and maintenance of desktop computers (Windows, Mac, and Linux), printers, and network equipment in addition to assisting in the administration and development of server systems including directory, file, database, mail and web servers. The role also involves supporting the setup and maintenance of scientific hardware and software in a laboratory environment, including developing software for experimental automation. The individual will work under the supervision of the Departmental IT Manager.

 

Candidates must possess good customer service and helpdesk skills, and the ability to work independently and effectively communicate with the user base. This job provides IS professionals the opportunity to be exposed to and explore new technologies, programming and a wide variety of software systems, and gain experience with systems administration.

SUMMARY OF DUTIES: General Systems Support

  • Setup and troubleshoot network, hardware, andsoftware
  • Assistinday-to-dayoperationsandmaintenanceofallcomputersystems,including computational clusters
  • Support Google Suiteservices
  • Analyze, prepare, and run the backup of network and user data
  • Analyze firewall, server, performance and other network logs as required
  • Assist staff on issues relating to general information technology
  • Assist the Departmental,Campus and Institutional IT Managers and IT Team members on local and Institutional wide services and systems
  • Assist in creating training materials and providing training to users on software applications,new technology systems, and computer policies
  • Analyze trends, devise and manage changes and communicate these needs to staff
  • Assist and perform any other tasks requested by thesupervisor


Lab Support

  • Install and maintain software on labcomputers
  • Purchase and maintain licenses for specialized labsoftware
  • Develop software for lab automation (Labview, Matlab,etc.)
  • Install and maintain labcomputers
  • Install and maintain hardware asneeded


MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Experience in a researchenvironment
  • Experience with desktop and server (Linux, MacOS, and Windows)environments
  • Application configuration and troubleshootingexperience
  • Hardware configuration and troubleshootingexperience
  • Ability to work well with others and communicate effectively with Scientific and SupportStaff
  • Ability to respond to issues quickly, multitask and meetdeadlines
  • Google Suiteexperience
  • Minimum of 30 credits or Associate degree in Information Systems or related field.Relevant computer support experience with a professional certification in networking or system administration may be substituted for educationalrequirement.
  • Must be eligible to work in the UnitedStates.


DESIRED EXPERIENCE:

  • Prior helpdeskexperience
  • Hardware interfacing and programming for scientific researchinstruments
  • Experience with one or more of the following languages: Python, Labview, R andMatlab
  • Network switch configuration and installation
  • Experience with network management including Vlans
  • Experience with system development including building servers
  • Willingness to learn
