The Air Force Association, an independent, non-profit, aerospace organization, located in Arlington, Virginia, seeks an Executive Vice President to serve as the number two senior staff executive reporting to the President. 

AFA's mission is to promote a dominant United States Air Force and a strong national defense, and to honor Airmen and our Air Force Heritage. To accomplish this, we:

1.EDUCATE the public on the critical need for unmatched aerospace power and a technically superior workforce to ensure U.S. national security

2.ADVOCATE for aerospace power and STEM education.

3. SUPPORT the total Air Force family and promote aerospace education.

The Executive Vice President (EVP) will: serve in the President’s role in his absence; track and report internally on designated Association projects, programs and initiatives; maintain contact with senior Air Force and DoD officials regarding Air Force budgets, programs, systems and operations; act as principal staff liaison with Air Force legal offices; connect with stakeholders including AFA leaders, field organizations and the aerospace industry; be an effective leader. The ideal candidate should have superb written, oral, organizational, and leadership skills as well as a proven track record of working Air Force issues across a broad spectrum of involvement.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Strong familiarity with the United States Department of Defense, the United States military, the United States Air Force, as well as their history, missions, organization, structure, systems, values, culture and customs
  • Visibility, reasonable access to, and credibility with Air Force senior leadership at Secretariat, Air Staff, MAJCOM and wing levels
  • Outstanding oral and written communications skills including strong public speaking abilities
  • A strong understanding of current topics of importance to the United States Air Force and the Association, and the ability to speak persuasively about them
  • Understanding of the Air Force Association, its history, its mission, its objectives, and its structure
  • Proven superior leadership and management skills
  • The ability to promote and lead a healthy, diverse work climate
  • The ability to lead effectively within a collaborative non-profit environment
  • The ability to structure and manage a multi-million-dollar organizational budget, including establishing and sustaining profitability
  • The ability to establish, assess and improve new and existing workflow processes for an established enterprise
  • The ability to successfully assess prospective and current staff performance and to assign new and existing staff members where they can be most productive
  • The ability to exercise discretion and to preserve confidentiality in matters requiring same
  • Outstanding team-building and team-management skills

Desired Qualifications

  • Advanced degree
  • Existing Air Force Association member
  • Membership association staff experience
  • Not-for-profit management experience
  • Program and budget management experience
