Senior Development Associate (Foundations) for Policy/Advocacy Nonprofit Reports To Director of Strategic Planning and Development Team Foundations, Strategic Planning and Development Job Overview The Senior Associate is responsible for managing and growing a portfolio of national and state donors for all membership groups, including by cultivating new and current donors, writing proposals and reports, researching new prospects, and monitoring ongoing grant work. The Senior Associate will work directly with senior CSA leadership (President, national directors, state directors) and the development team to meet annual and long-range funding goals. Responsibilities and Duties The Senior Associate: Manages a portfolio of foundation and/or government donors that collectively contribute more than $3 million annually to support CSA advocacy projects and programs and helps meet the organization's overall revenue goals. Develops and supports the implementation of individualized strategies to identify, cultivate, solicit, steward, and renew donations from foundations. Leads the development activities for three satellite offices along with targeted DC staffed states. Oversees the process of developing and implementing grant agreements to ensure CSA, as an organization, achieves outcomes to the satisfaction of the funder. Monitors progress on current contribution agreements and works internally with teams across the organization to identify and address areas of need to ensure we deliver grant outcomes. Guided by the scope of prospects' interests and knowledge of CSA's organizational priorities, collaborates across the organization to leverage the maximum philanthropic potential of donor prospects, fully utilizing the expertise of project/program staff and organizational leadership, and involving them as appropriate in the identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship process. Supports the Director of Strategic Planning and Development in implementing processes and procedures that support fundraising activities and internal reporting, and in executing programmatic priorities and goals for the department. Supports the cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of prospective donors by preparing research reports, talking points, meeting notes, proposals, reports, project updates, email updates, acknowledgments, and/or other related materials necessary to deepen prospect engagement, secure contributions, and steward relationships. Contributes to the development of organizational materials created primarily for use with donors and prospects, including (for example) background materials and other illustrations of our work. Recruits and manages an intern, when strategic, for at least one semester a year, that includes providing training, overseeing the intern's weekly workload, and contributing to the planning of organization-wide internship program. Qualifications Essential: Experience with raising foundation funds and grant writing for national nonprofit organizations. Strong oral and written communications skills. Detailed-oriented and well-organized; able to work independently to achieve goals and meet deadlines. Ability to work diplomatically and effectively with development colleagues, national office staff, and remote staff. Ability to juggle multiple projects at once, and respond rapidly and flexibly to changing priorities. Ability to represent the organization, mission, and work to garner financial support. Ability to independently lead effective meetings with staff, external partners, and prospective and current funders. Ability to persevere - cold-call, not take no for an answer. Ability to work adeptly with Word/Excel/PowerPoint, Salesforce, and Google Drive. Strong commitment to our mission and strategic vision. Desirable: Knowledge of and contacts within the fundraising space including donors, partners, and other connectors. Experience in a national policy advocacy nonprofit. Knowledge of our core policy issues, including early childhood education and care, children's health and nutrition, and family policy. Understanding of the legislative process and advocacy strategies. Experience with government grants and contracts. Experience with Salesforce or other comparable constituent management system. Good sense of humor. Minimum experience required: 3-5 years of relevant, professional experience in development, ideally in a non-profit organization that focuses on public policy and advocacy. Education: College degree required; Graduate degree not required, but is a plus. Travel: Occasional travel is required out of the state. Overnight: Yes Duration: 1-3 days per month
