The attorney in this position will be responsible for providing advice and assistance on the many federal and state privacy laws that impact Capital One's businesses, with a particular focus on data security and third-party data sharing. Working closely with business, compliance, and risk partners, you will be a go-to resource across the company on privacy, data protection, and related legal issues. You will operate at the intersection of financial services and technology, and you will brainstorm, problem-solve, and innovate to assess and mitigate legal risk in a challenging and evolving space. We are looking for an attorney who is collaborative, inquisitive, enthusiastic about technology, and exhibits grounded judgment in novel situations. You'll need strong analytical and organizational skills, great judgment, and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment with minimal supervision, large volumes of work, and complex legal issues that may arise suddenly. We want someone with an ownership mentality but who enjoys being part of a team and can interact with and influence across departments and job levels. A good sense of humor is a plus Responsibilities include: Provide expert advice on applicable privacy laws, with particular emphasis on data sharing involving third parties, data security and authentication requirements, and data breach notification requirements Advise Capital One's Corporate and Strategic Transactions legal team and Enterprise Supplier Management functions on privacy and data security issues arising in third party agreements Analyze and interpret proposed laws and regulations impacting business units and assist in devising compliance methods that meet business goals and objectives. Manage outside counsel regarding US privacy and data security matters Basic Qualifications: At least 5 years of legal experience Juris Doctor and membership in good standing in at least one state bar. Preferred Qualifications: 2 years of experience in privacy law or 2 years of experience in technology 2 years of experience in government or 2 years of experience in-house
