The Community Health Services Bureau is hiring a bilingual Clinic Aide to be part of the Public Health Division. This employee serves as a member of a multi-disciplinary team of health professionals who provide a variety of services in the public health clinics at 2100 Washington Blvd. These services include: Maternity, Family Planning, Immunization, Pregnancy Testing, Teen Health, Health Assessment, PPD readings, Car Seat Safety Classes, Sexually Transmitted Infections, and Nurse of the Day (NOD). The population served is an ethnically and culturally diverse community, with approximately 55% Spanish speakers, many of whom Spanish is the primary language and who have limited English skills.

Specific duties include:

  • Stocking and setting up exam rooms before each clinic; and breaking down and cleaning rooms after clinics;
  • Checking-in clients, assisting patients into exam rooms, orienting them on clinic procedures, and providing support to clinicians during medical procedures;
  • Obtaining client measurements and blood pressure; and documenting/graphing results in medical records;
  • Preparing lab slips and collecting, sorting, filing, and recording lab specimens and lab results;
  • Placing reminder and follow- up phone calls for clinic appointments, referrals, or general information;
  • Entering data into the county/state data bases (e.g. VISION); and
  • Stocking supplies for clinics and educational materials for the different programs.
The employee may be asked to accompany public health nurses on home visits to act as an interpreter, and/or to interpret for clients who only speak Spanish.

Selection Criteria

Language proficiency: English/Spanish

Minimum:   High school diploma or equivalent plus two years of full-time experience providing direct human services (e.g. taking vital signs, setting up and restocking exam rooms, assisting nurses and clinicians to ensure a smooth clinic flow, providing support to the different clinic coordinators by preparing medical records and performing other post clinic follow up activities) in a health care setting; and CPR Certification or the ability to obtain certification within 30 days of hire.

Substitution: Satisfactory completion of college coursework in a human services related field may be substituted for up to one year of experience on a year for year basis (an academic year is defined as 30 semester or 45 quarter hours.) Additional education may not substitute for more than one year of full-time experience.

Desirable: Preference may be given to candidates who have experience working with culturally diverse communities.

Special Requirements

An assessment of oral Spanish will be required before a candidate can be appointed to this position. The incumbent of this position will receive language pay on all hours worked and on paid leave hours.

Applicant must possess, or obtain by the time of appointment, a valid motor vehicle operator's license from the applicant's place of residence or the applicant must have the ability and willingness to use alternative methods of transportation to perform assigned duties and responsibilities at locations other than the primary worksite. If the applicant possesses or acquires a license, the applicant must provide or authorize Arlington County to obtain a copy of the applicant's official state/district driving record. Any offer of employment may be contingent on a favorable review of the applicant's driving record.

A pre-employment criminal records check as well as a State of Virginia Central Registry check will be conducted. 


Additional Information

Work Hours: Flexible schedule Monday through Friday within the core hours of 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, plus one or two evenings per week.
