  • EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: In order to qualify for a Biologist, GS-401 position you must meet the following Education Requirements:
    A. have completed the requirements for a bachelor's (or graduate) degree in a biological science, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to this position, from an accredited college or university;
    OR
    B. have a combination of experience and education which includes courses comparable to a major in a biological science, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry or related disciplines appropriate to this position, AND I have appropriate experience or additional education which demonstrates similarly appropriate skills or abilities needed to perform the duties of this position.

    GS-7: In addition, in order to qualify at the GS-7 level, you must:
    A. have completed one full year of graduate level education;
    OR
    B. meet one of the requirements for superior academic achievement based on a) graduating within the upper third of the graduating class in a college, university, or major subdivision such as the College of Liberal Arts or the School of Business Administration, based on completed courses; b) having a grade point average of 3.0 or higher out of a possible 4.0 as recorded on your official transcript, or as computed based on 4 years of education, or as computed based on courses completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum; or 3.5 or higher out of a possible 4.0 based on the average of the required courses completed in the major field or the required courses in the major field completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum; OR c) being elected for membership in a national scholastic honor society;
    OR
    C. have 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-05 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: assisting in conducting and setting up laboratory experiments; performing specific procedures and techniques in the biological sciences as directed by senior staff within a laboratory; and assisting in the maintenance of laboratory facilities by checking current inventory of supplies in the laboratory and ordering appropriate required materials;
    OR
    D. have a combination of post baccalaureate education and experience that meets 100% of the qualification requirements for this position.

    GS-9: In addition, in order to qualify at the GS-9 level, you must:
    A. have completed 2 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree;
    OR
    B. have 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-07 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: performing experiments in accordance with approved methods and procedures ; preparing detailed plans for experiments and procedures to be performed; analyzing experimental data and drawing tentative conclusions and using and maintaining a variety of laboratory instruments and ensuring laboratory equipment is calibrated and in working order;
    OR
    C.
    have a combination of post baccalaureate education and experience that meets 100% of the qualification requirements for this position.

    Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
