Responsibilities: The Business and Office Manager works with directors and student media groups to provide general oversight of Student Media in several essential areas, including financial, personnel, assessment, and development. Key responsibilities include working with the Student Media directors and advisers on budget management, office management, and use of entrepreneurial strategies to obtain resources for a best practice Student Media office. Considered the largest classroom on campus, Student Media prides itself on helping students find their niche at Mason while they build career-ready skills in our experiential learning environment. Student Media serves as the voice of the student body and publishes exclusive content in print, online, and over the air. The home of three student teams (communication, sales, and PR) and 11 unique student-run media groups that include Mason’s official newspaper (Fourth Estate), radio station (WGMU Radio), television network (Mason Cable Network), live sports broadcast team, political website (Masonvotes.com), Mason student chapter of Society of Professional Journalists, (SPJ), two undergraduate literary journals (Volition, The George Mason Review), and three graduate literary journals (The Hispanic Culture Review, So to Speak, Phoebe) that showcase creativity and scholarship from across the curriculum.
Specific responsibilities include:
REVENUE DEVELOPMENT: Coordinates fundraising efforts and donations. Advises student editors on identifying and securing new revenue streams for their media groups. Markets production rental and media services
OFFICE MANAGEMENT: Supervises and trains a five-member student Communication team, a three-member student PR team, and a four-member student Sales team. Supervises office space usage and approves office access for qualified staff
FINANCIAL: Supervises and processes accounts receivable collection for all media groups. Handles all accounts payable, purchases, and travel requests. Serves as contract administrator related to publication printing
PERSONNEL: Approves and processes HR paperwork, scholarship stipends, and honorariums.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • A bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and work experience;
  • Excellent oral and written communication;
  • Previous success in revenue development;
  • Demonstrated supervisory ability

  • PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Previous experience working in a media environment;
  • Previous experience in a higher education environment;
  • Ability to work with limited supervision;
  • Ability to adapt to a high level of turnover among student workers
