Requirements

Research Analyst (3 opportunities) - School of Foreign Service (SFS)

The School of Foreign (SFS) was founded in 1919 as a direct response to the involvement of the United States in the First World War. The establishment of a program at Georgetown dedicated to educating students on global issues and preparing them for lives of service in the international arena reflected both the University's Jesuit heritage, with its emphasis on intercultural understanding, and its origins as an institution of the American Enlightenment, dedicated to the rights of man and the education of citizens.

The Center for Security and Emerging Technology (CSET) is focused on studying the security impacts of emerging technologies, supporting academic work in security and technology studies, and delivering nonpartisan analysis to technologists and policymakers. Initial focus will be on artificial intelligence and advanced computing.

The Research Analyst, reporting to the Center's Director of Data Science and Research, will be responsible for:

  • Collaborating with Research Fellows, other Research Analysts, Data Scientists, and Center leadership to develop and execute research proposals.
  • Supporting research tasks like completing literature reviews, conducting research interviews, identifying and analyzing additional data and information sources from non-academic sources.
  • Contributing to and coauthoring written publications under the supervision of Research Fellows.
  • Attending DC briefings and events and provide summaries to Research staff.
  • Supporting Research Fellows in the management and execution of research sub-grants to other academic institutions and centers.
  • Developing and helping to deliver presentations and briefs for policy-making audiences on topics related to emerging technologies, specifically, Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), National Security, and associated policy considerations.
  • Monitoring trends and developments in AI, ML, and national security policy.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in relevant field
  • 2+ years of demonstrated experience in research and policy analysis including familiarity with interpreting and visualizing data
  • Ability to carry on assigned tasks with limited need for supervision
  • Proficiency with office productivity tools like Google Docs, Microsoft Office, etc.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and critical thinking skills
  • Motivated, enthusiastic and self-driven

Preferred Qualifications

  • MA/MS or graduate coursework in public policy, public administration, international relations, or related field
  • Familiarity with recent developments in machine learning and computing
  • Foreign language proficiency
