The George Mason University Volgenau School of Engineering seeks outstanding faculty candidates for multiple tenured faculty positions at the Associate or Full Professor rank. We seek outstanding, entrepreneurial faculty having proven leadership in research in our strategic growth areas and who are passionate about research and education and in a dynamic, multi-disciplinary environment. Areas of interest include but are not limited to artificial intelligence and machine learning, robotics and autonomous systems, cybersecurity, smart infrastructure, smart materials, advanced manufacturing, biomedical imaging and devices, biomaterials, and sustainability. Candidates with an impactful research record in emerging areas that are critical to addressing global challenges are particularly encouraged to apply.

Responsibilities: The candidate will be expected to lead transformative growth and impact of our research portfolio, and to further encourage and foster new and existing collaborations with academic, industrial, and governmental institutions in the greater Washington, D.C., area. The successful candidate will be expected to accelerate the growth of high-quality academic programs, facilitate interdisciplinary research initiatives, and broaden the scope and focus areas of research in Mason with significant potential for commercialization.

Required Qualifications: Candidates must have earned a doctorate in engineering, computer science, information technology, or a related field; and be eligible for a tenured appointment at the rank of associate or full professor. The successful candidate should have an outstanding research and publication record, as well as a commitment to excellence in both graduate and undergraduate education; significant leadership experience, including fostering interdisciplinary research/education and mentoring more junior colleagues. Candidates must have a demonstrable commitment to diversity and inclusion in higher education.

Innovative Research: Concurrent with Amazons recent announcement that it is building a new headquarters in Arlington, Virginia, Mason announced three exciting new initiatives: (1) the launch of the Institute for Digital InnovAtion (IDIA) which will focus on a broad set of foundational areas, including Artificial Intelligence, Autonomous Systems, Computational Methods, Cyber and National Security, Data Analytics and Data Science, Human-Centered Computing, and Resilient/Smart Infrastructure; (2) the expansion of its Arlington Campus with a planned 400,000 square foot Digital InnovAtion Building; and (3) the launch of Masons School of Computing. Together these three initiatives reflect hundreds of millions of dollars in new investment by Mason that will rapidly elevate Masons already leading national position in computing and related areas.

About Us: The Future of Engineering is Here. The Volgenau School of Engineering is a fast-growing force for innovation in technology and education. The school enrolls approximately almost 8,000 students in 35 bachelors, masters, and doctoral degree programs, including several first-of-their-kind offerings. Of the 231 full-time faculty who comprise the School, 95 are tenured, 43 are tenure-track, 60 are instructional faculty, and 33 are research faculty.

Located in the heart of Northern Virginias technology corridor, Mason Engineering stands out for its leadership in emerging areas including big data, cybersecurity, healthcare technology, robotics, signals and communications, and sustainable infrastructure. Over the 12 months ending in November 2018, sponsored research expenditures by the Schools faculty exceeded $44 million and sponsored research awards exceeded $67 million.
