THERAPEUTIC RECREATION (TR) SUMMER CAMP STAFF

Therapeutic Recreation Camp Counselors are needed for exciting summer positions with Arlington County Department of Parks and Recreation. Opportunities for temporary summer employment with the Arlington County Department of Parks and Recreation include work as Camp Directors, Assistant Directors, and support staff in camp programs throughout the County.
Several positions available ranging up to 40 hours/week providing camp programs for individuals with disabilities. Staff must commit from June 24 â€“ August 16, 2019 (core camp dates). Additional weeks August 19 â€“ August 30 2019 may also be available. Training starts at the beginning of June and includes some Saturday and evening sessions.
Inclusion Support â€“ Provide assistance to campers with disabilities, ages 3-15, in general recreation camps or designated site camps. Work with participants to develop skills, manage challenging behaviors, provide personal care, and foster independent participation. Work with camp staff to create a positive, inclusive environment for all campers. This may be to provide 1:1 support or as part of lowering ratio at various general recreation camps. This position is up to 40 hrs/wk and is dependent upon assignment needs. Access to reliable transportation required - must be able to get to different sites around the County independently. Hours vary. (Positions Available: RAI, RAII)
Camp Discovery (elementary ages) â€“ Assist campers with disabilities, ages 6-11, in an adapted camp setting. Hours can vary between 8am-6pm and are dependent on week or shift. Most shifts take place between 11:15 am-5:45pm M-F. (Positions Available: SAI/II, RAI, RAII, RAIII, RAIV)
Adventure Quest (teen and young adult ages) â€“ Assist campers with disabilities, ages 12-21, in an adapted camp setting. Hours can vary between 8:30am-6:15pm and are dependent on week or shift. Most shifts take place between 11:30am-6:15pm M-F. Hours for week 8 of camp will vary, if assigned to another camp or inclusion role after Adventure Quest ends. (Positions Available: SAI/II, RAI, RAII, RAIII, RAIV)
Project FIVE (teen, young adult ages) â€“ Assist campers with and without disabilities, ages 13 â€“ 21, as they work together to complete service projects and foster peer friendships in an inclusive setting. Staff hours for this program are typically M-F, 8:30-4:30pm. Hours for week 8 of camp will vary, if assigned to another camp or inclusion role after Project FIVE ends. (Positions Available: RAII, RAIII, RAIV)
Substitute Support â€“This is for an applicant who is not looking for or not able to maintain 20-40 hours a week. Responsibilities may include: providing inclusion support for participants in evening and weekend general recreation classes and fill in as needed as inclusion support in general recreation camps or in our Therapeutic Recreation adapted recreation camps. Flexibility is required and on-call status is preferred. (Positions Available: RAI, RAII)
We are currently hiring for:
STUDENT ASSISTANT I/II - $7.33-$8.89/Hour
Responsible for assisting all leaders in the summer camp or program activities and operations. These individuals are either non-high school graduates (SA I) or high school graduates enrolled in post-high school level education programs who have not accumulated at least 3 months of relevant experience (SA II). Applicants must be at least 16 years old to be hired for licensed preschool camp, all other camps require the applicant be at least 15 years old. Applications for Student Assistant positions will only be considered from individuals who have previously volunteered in one or more of our summer camps.
SUMMER RECREATION ASSISTANT I- $13.13/Hour
Responsible for assisting with the leading of recreation activities and behavior management of participants for a summer camp. Assist in camp or program operations. Minimum requirements: Completion of requirements for graduation from high school or GED equivalent, plus three months experience in administering recreational programs. CPR and First Aid Certification is desirable for applicants hired at this level.
SUMMER RECREATION ASSISTANT II- $13.97/Hour
Responsible for assisting in the planning, leading, and conducting of recreation activities for a camp, behavior management of participants, and assisting in the evaluations of the activities and the participants. Minimum requirements: Completion of requirements for graduation from high school or GED equivalent, plus six months experience in administering recreational programs or facility monitoring. Certification in CPR and First Aid is required for all applicants hired at this level.
RECREATION ASSISTANT III - $15.75/Hour
Responsible for planning, leading, and conducting recreation activities for a summer camp. Responsible for completing participant and program evaluations. Performs related supervisory and administrative duties. Minimum requirements: Completion of requirements for graduation from high school or GED equivalent, plus one-year experience (equivalent of 4 summers) in administering recreation programs. Certification in CPR and First Aid is required for all applicants hired at this level.
RECREATION ASSISTANT IV - $18.97/Hour
Responsible for directing a summer camp with responsibility for all rooms in that program. Performs supervisory and administrative duties. Minimum requirements: Completion of the requirements for graduation from an accredited college or university with a degree in leisure or recreational studies, special education or a related field, plus one-year experience (equivalent of 4 summers) in administrating recreation programs. Certification in CPR and First Aid is required for all applicants hired at this level. If you are hired as a Preschool Camp Director, you must be 21 years old at time of employment.

The successful candidate will have good character and integrity, positive communication skills, reliable transportation, the ability to complete tasks as assigned, take the initiative when needed, and the ability to work successfully in a team environment. Staff may be asked to work with individuals with disabilities.

If selected, all summer staff will be required to:
- Agree to a criminal background check.
- Candidates will be asked to provide two letters of reference from related work/school experience prior to an offer of employment. Letters of reference may be attached to this application.
- Provide negative TB results or submit to a TB screening.
- Attend all required trainings.
- Some positions require a valid motorized vehicle operator's license and driving history record check.
- Some positions require First Aid/CPR certification.
- Be open to provide personal care as needed to campers (training provided).

Applications received after that date will be considered only if there is need to consider other applicants. Please note that interviews will be conducted, and positions will be filled on a continuous basis, therefore, applicants are encouraged to apply as soon as possible. Written notification will be sent to those applicants who applied but were not hired, once all positions are filled. Generally, these letters are sent out in mid-July.
Interview process: If selected for an interview, applicants will participate in a30-45 minute in person interview.
