Evening Laborer II  
An Overview
A Laborer II performs journey-level tasks of more than ordinary difficulty. An employee in this class must be able to perform heavy physical labor safely and efficiently. The Laborer II class differs from Laborer I in that tasks require a greater degree of skill and knowledge of departmental operations. Laborers work under the immediate supervision of a lead worker or Labor Supervisor who lays out the details of each specific assignment and constantly checks the work in process and upon completion; or performs routine tasks independently after initial instruction. An incumbent in this class may assist Laborers III and Equipment Operators I and II in their various tasks.
This position supports the evening operation on King Street (2:00pm -10:30pm).
 The Opportunity

  • Operates a rear-load packet refuse collection truck and leads the work of Laborers or Refuse Collectors;
  • Operates a variety of equipment in cleaning and hauling snow from roads and streets; also shovels snow when not operating heavy trucks;
  • Operates a light truck in carrying tools, equipment and other supplies;
  • Assists in loading and unloading materials and equipment;
  • Keeps equipment clean, makes minor repairs and reports any malfunctions of equipment to fleet management shop;
  • Responds to citizen inquiries regarding refuse and recycling services;
  • Responds to emergency or special events activity as needed;
  • Power washes litter cans and sidewalks; Paints litter receptacles, equipment, and small projects; and
  • Performs related work as required. 

The Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate must have completed high school or vocational school courses; ability to perform heavy manual labor in all types of weather; some knowledge of construction or maintenance activities and the equipment and tools of the trade; and one year experience in any trade; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
 
To be considered as an ideal candidate, one should also possess knowledge of equipment and tools and their safe use; the ability to follow written instructions; two years of experience as a semi-skilled worker.  Possession of a valid Commercial Driver's license (CDL) issued by their state of residency.
