The George Mason University Libraries seeks to fill the position of a Digital Developer. This is a forward-looking, transformative, collaborative position, supporting the Libraries as it builds new digital collections and develops and maintains digital systems and services in support of research, teaching and learning. We are seeking candidates who have developed skills typically associated with a strong academic background in computer science. While having end-to-end responsibility for some applications, the Digital Developer will also consult and work collaboratively with library faculty and staff, instructional faculty, researchers, and students on a variety of digital projects. Position reports to and receives project priority direction from the Director, Digital Technologies and Services.

Duties include:

  • Support digital initiatives for the George Mason Libraries as directed;
  • Serve as a technical consultant for library faculty as they work to build digital tools, services, and/or collections;
  • Develop, debug, modify and maintain complex software systems, including the full stack of components behind data driven applications and APIs;
  • Work both independently and within teams to support digital initiatives within the Libraries;
  • Stays current in the field and devote necessary time to increase knowledge of emerging technologies; and
  • Develops working partnerships and relationships with faculty, researchers and, where appropriate, students.

    Required Qualifications:
  • ALA-accredited masters degree in library or information science (OR an equivalent certified foreign degree), with a significant concentration in information systems and related technologies; or computer science;
  • Solid knowledge of HTML, CSS, JQuery and JavaScript;
  • Experience with database-driven web development (using technologies such as Ruby, Rails, SQL, PHP, Perl, JSON, XML, etc.);
  • Experience working in Linux/Unix environment;
  • Experience and comfort working in groups;
  • Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills;
  • Positive outlook and willingness to learn;
  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative and meet deadlines;
  • Demonstrated programming skills in a modern language;
  • Familiarity with applying WCAG 2.0 accessibility standards;
  • Effective written and oral communication skills; and
  • Demonstrated commitment to professional development and growth. Preferred Qualifications:
  • Additional Masters degree in Computer Science; and
