Job Description:

The Paraprofessional III (LPN) assists with the physical and instructional needs of students with disabilities. This support position is responsible for students who demonstrate a need for specialized nursing care and skills. The Paraprofessional III (LPN) observes and documents student progress into Welligent; implements plans for instruction; attends to the student's personal needs and any other duties necessary to support the individual student. This job reports to the Principal.

Qualifications:

• Education: 48 college credits or an AA degree, or a passing score on a paraprofessional proficiency test.
• Certificates & Licenses:
  • The selected candidate must be a Licensed Practical Nurse.
  • CPR and First Aid certification are required. If the selected candidate does not have CPR and First Aid certification, they must be able to obtain both within 3 months of employment.
• Experience: Job related experience is required.
• Key Competencies: Ability to reinsert tracheostomy or gastrostomy durable medical equipment preferred.

Essential Functions:

• Adapts classroom activities, assignments and/or materials under the direction of the teacher to provide an opportunity for all special education students to participate in classroom activities.
• Assists children with disabilities on and off the bus. In some instances, it may be necessary to assist, via cab, in the transportation of the student to and from school.
• Assists children with nursing and healthcare needs (e.g. tube feedings, tracheal suctioning, bladder catheterization, vital signs, medication administration, O2 therapy).
• In cooperation with students' families, ensures that the student has the proper equipment in stock.
• Administers medications under the supervision of the school's Registered Nurse.
• Assists students with breakfast, lunch, snack, clean-up, lavatory, clothing, personal hygiene and wash-up.
• Confers with teachers, parents, and multidisciplinary care team members on a regular basis to assist in evaluating special education student progress and/or implementing IEP/504 objectives.
• Implements academic instruction taught by a teacher for individuals or small groups to meet learning goals, as described by an IEP/504 and/or district benchmarks.
• Implements behavioral plans designed by IEP team or 504 plans for students with behavior disorders or other special conditions to assist in meeting special education students' needs and provide a consistent environment.
• Instructs special education students (e.g. math groups, science experiments, reading, behavioral skills, daily living skills, writing, verbal skills, etc.) to implement goals for remediation of student deficiencies and ensure students' success.
• Maintains instructional materials and/or student files/records (e.g. Welligent medical record, completes billing for Medicaid when appropriate, adapting instructional materials, student files, checking papers, attendance, audio visual equipment, set up art/science projects, etc.).
• Monitors special education students (e.g. lunch, playground, during life enrichment activities, etc.) to ensure a safe and positive learning environment.
• Performs record keeping (daily data on instruction and/or behavior) and clerical functions (e.g. correcting papers, copying, instructional materials, etc.) in support of the teacher.
• Responds to emergency situations and resolves immediate safety concerns.
• Participates in a variety of meetings to convey and/or gather information required to perform functions.
• Performs other related duties, as assigned, to ensure the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
