    SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTOR
    This position requires a Selective Placement Factor for successful performance upon entering the job. Selective Placement Factors are knowledge, skills and/or abilities that are essential for satisfactory performance on the job. You will be ineligible for further consideration if you do not possess it.

    BASIC REQUIREMENT
    To be considered for an Economist position, you must have:

    A. Degree: Economics, that includes at least 21 semester hours in economics and 3 semester hours in statistics, accounting or calculus.

    B. Combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major in economics or agricultural economics, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

    Examples of qualifying experience include: individual economic research assignments requiring planning, information assembly, analysis and evaluation, conclusions and report preparation; supervisory or project coordination assignments involving a staff of professional economists, and requiring the evaluation and interpretation of economic information; or teaching assignments in a college or university that included both class instruction in economics subjects and one of the following (1) personal research that produced evidence of results, (2) direction of graduate theses in economics, or (3) service as a consultant or advisor on technical economics problems.

    IN ADDITION to meeting the selective placement factor above, you must have the specialized experience below. You may be able to substitute your education in certain instances. If you can, we mention it under the appropriate grade level.

    Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through national service programs (e.g., Peace Corps and AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

    To qualify at the GS-14 level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience obtained in the private or public sector that is equivalent to the GS-13 level. Your experience must demonstrate the following: professional experience examining economic and/or industry analyses in support of trade-related programs to help guide the analytical efforts of a program; providing expert economic advice to senior officials on the economic facets of an assigned study; conducting economic research and/or assessment in support of various projects or an assigned study; and experience formulating and completing analysis on key economic, industry, and policy issues .

    There is no substitution of education for experience at the grade 14 level. Your education must be combined with specialized experience as listed above.

    To qualify at the GS-15 level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience obtained in the private or public sector that is equivalent to the GS-14 level. Your experience must demonstrate the following: professional experience examining economic and/or industry analyses in support of trade-related programs to help guide the analytical efforts of a program; providing expert economic advice to senior officials on the economic facets of an assigned study; conducting economic research and/or assessment in support of various projects or an assigned study; and experience formulating and completing analysis on key economic, industry, and policy issues .

    There is no substitution of education for experience at the grade 15 level. Your education must be combined with specialized experience as listed above.

    This occupation has a positive education and specialized experience requirement. Specifics are detailed below:

    Basic Education requirement for all applicants:
    Possession of BA or higher degree in Economics that included at least 21 semester hours in economics and 3 semester hours in statistics, accounting or calculus. You are required to submit a copy of your transcript to verify this requirement.

    Education must have been completed in an accredited institution, recognized by the U.S. Department of Education, in order to be credited. Education completed in foreign colleges or universities may be used to meet the education requirement if you can show that the foreign education is comparable to that received in an accredited educational institution in the United States.
