  • BASIC REQUIREMENTS:Must be certified as a dental radiographer. Public Law 97-35 requires persons who administer Radiologic procedures to meet the credentialing standards in 42 CFR Part 75. You must submit a copy of your certification or written document from a licensed practitioner as part of your application.Special Requirements for the GS-5 and above Dental Assistant (Expanded Function):Applicant for Dental Assistant (Expanded Function) positions must have completed 1 year of acceptable course work, preceptorship, or other formal training and/or work assignments specifically designed to equip them with knowledge and skills required to perform intra-oral procedures involved in the position to be filled.

    SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE:
    GS-05: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-04 level in the Federal service or equivalent, which has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skill, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. Specialized experience involves dental assistance to general or specialized dentistry, dental assistant (expanded function) work, or any combination of these appropriate to the position being filled; knowledge of the instruments, materials, and standardized dental procedures used in the full variety of treatments provided in general and specialty dental practices; basic knowledge of dental science such as oral anatomy, oral physiology and histology, the principles and techniques of dental assisting, and dental instruments and materials.

    GS-06: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-05 level in the Federal service or equivalent, which has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skill, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. Specialized experience involves knowledge of dental anatomy, related oral anatomy, the technical methods and practices of dentistry, and the working characteristics of dental instruments and materials sufficient to perform a wide variety of intra-oral procedures, including restoration of teeth prepared by dentist and adapting and seating stainless steel crowns; knowledge of and ability to recognize common dental disorders and conditions such as tooth decay and inflamed tissue sufficient to perform as directed by dentist intra-oral procedures which treat these conditions.

    GS-07: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-06 level in the Federal service or equivalent, which has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skill, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. Specialized experience involves performing a variety of intra-oral procedures involving many techniques and skilled, detailed workmanship to complete, e.g., amalgam restorations requiring cusp replacement or construction and placement of temporary crowns and bridges; carefully consider detailed aspects of dental anatomy and ensuring that the procedures are functionally compatible with the dental anatomy of each patient; perform complex intra-oral procedures such as restoration of grossly decayed teeth.

    GS-08: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-07 level in the Federal service or equivalent, which has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skill, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. Specialized experience involves restoring teeth prepared by dentist with permanent and temporary fillings: placing bases and liners; selecting, adapting and placing matrices to normal and abnormal teeth; placing, condensing, carving, finishing and polishing amalgam restorations, including those involving grossly decayed teeth requiring cusp replacement and retentive pins; placing, compressing and finishing synthetic restorations including multi-surfaced anterior restorations; placing and contouring temporary restorations; supporting dentist in endodontic treatments by applying rubber dam, removing temporary filling using low speed hand-piece, and cleansing and drying operative field; retracting gingiva from tooth for final impressions by placing and removing retraction cord.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:
    1. Knowledge of dental science such as oral anatomy, oral physiology and histology, the principles and techniques of dental assisting, and dental instruments and materials.
    2. Knowledge of sterilization techniques sufficient to sterilize dental instruments and equipment.
    3. Knowledge of dental terminology and administrative requirements for proper record keeping procedures to maintain patient dental health records, and patient scheduling.
    4. Skill and dexterity in manipulating a variety of instruments and equipment while performing dental assisting procedures.
    5. Skill in operating and adjusting dental radiographic equipment IAW accepted radiation safety standards and processing dental radiographs.

    PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

    VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

    IF USING EDUCATION TO QUALIFY: You MUST provide transcripts to support your educational claims. Education must be accredited by an accrediting institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.

    FOREIGN EDUCATION: Education completed in foreign colleges or universities may be used to meet the requirements. You must show proof the education credentials have been deemed to be at least equivalent to that gained in conventional U.S. education program. It is your responsibility to provide such evidence when applying.

    Tax Law Impact for PCS:
    On 22-Dec-2017, Public Law 115-97 - the "Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 suspended qualified moving expense deductions along with the exclusion for employer reimbursements and payments of moving expenses effective 01-Jan-2018 for tax years 2018 through 2025.
