Additional education may be substituted for or combined with experience as follows:

0801 - General Engineer: 

  • A combination of a bachelor's degree in engineering with superior academic achievement (3.0 or higher GPA) and 1 year of appropriate professional experience* OR
  • Successful completion of a 5-year program of study of at least 160 semester hours leading to a bachelor's degree in engineering, and 1 year of appropriate professional experience* OR
  • A master's or higher degree in engineering OR
  • A bachelor's degree in engineering and at least 2 years of progressively higher level graduate education in a closely related field (such as physics) leading to a master's degree or a master's or higher degree in a closely related field.  The graduate education must have provided the knowledge, skills, and abilities to necessary to perform the work of the position OR
  • A combination of specialized experience listed under "Specialized Experience Requirements" below and graduate education described above that, when combined, equal 100% of the total requirement. (Please note that only graduate education in excess of the first 18 semester hours may be used in this calculation.)

*Definition of professional engineering experience: Non-routine engineering work that required and was characterized by (1) professional knowledge of engineering; (2) professional ability to apply such knowledge to engineering problems; and (3) positive and continuing development of professional knowledge and ability. Professional knowledge of engineering is defined as the comprehensive, in-depth knowledge of mathematical, physical, and engineering sciences applicable to a specialty field of engineering that characterizes a full 4-year engineering program leading to a bachelor's degree, or the equivalent. Professional ability to apply engineering knowledge is defined as the ability to (a) apply fundamental and diversified professional engineering concepts, theories, and practices to achieve engineering objectives with versatility, judgment, and perception; (b) adapt and apply methods and techniques of related scientific disciplines; and (c) organize, analyze, interpret, and evaluate scientific data in the solution of engineering problems.

1301 - Physical Scientist: 

  • A bachelor's degree as listed in the Education section and at least 2 years of progressively higher level directly related graduate education leading to a master's degree OR master's or equivalent graduate degree.  The graduate education must have provided the knowledge, skills, and abilities to necessary to perform the work of the position OR
  • A combination of specialized experience listed under "Specialized Experience Requirements" below and graduate education described above that, when combined, equal 100% of the total requirement.  (Please note that only graduate education in excess of the first 18 semester hours may be used in this calculation.)

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

A qualified candidate's online application and resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower next lower NNSA Demonstration Project pay band (NN-01) or GS grade level (GS-07) in the Federal service.

Specialized experience for this position is defined as experience performing work as an advanced trainee in engineering or physical science professions, such as: 

  • Preparing, providing, and evaluating conventional plans, designs, design specifications, and related documentation.
  • Performing and interpreting calculations, analyses, and computations.
  • Conducting analytical investigations using the scientific method.
  • Articulating information through various venues such as discussions, meetings, fact sheets, reports, design documentation, briefings, and presentations.
  • Selecting samples, interpolating missing data, uncovering discrepancies, and performing scientific analyses in support of projects assigned to higher level employees.

In addition, your application and resume should demonstrate that you possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs). Do not provide a separate narrative written statement. Rather, you must describe in your application how your past work experience demonstrates that you possess the KSAs identified below. Cite specific examples of employment or experience contained in your resume and describe how this experience has prepared you to successfully perform the duties of this position. DO NOT write "see resume" in your application!

  1. Knowledge of the principles, concepts, theories, and practices of multiple engineering and physical science disciplines to include chemical, electrical, mechanical, and nuclear engineering; and/or chemistry, physics, and material science.
  2. Skill in the application of quantitative and qualitative analytical principles and techniques, including statistical analysis and trending, sufficient to assist in evaluating a large volume of technical and business oriented data to determine its validity and draw appropriate conclusions.
  3. Ability to communicate clearly and persuasively orally.
  4. Ability to communicate clearly and persuasively in writing.

"Experience" refers to paid and unpaid experience. Examples of qualifying unpaid experience may include: volunteer work done through National Service programs (such as Peace Corps and AmeriCorps); as well as work for other community-based philanthropic and social organizations. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills; and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Basic Degree Requirements:

0801 - Degree: Engineering. To be acceptable, the program must: (1) lead to a bachelor's degree in a school of engineering with at least one program accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET); or (2) include differential and integral calculus and courses (more advanced than first-year physics and chemistry) in five of the following seven areas of engineering science or physics: (a) statics, dynamics; (b) strength of materials (stress-strain relationships); (c) fluid mechanics, hydraulics; (d) thermodynamics; (e) electrical fields and circuits; (f) nature and properties of materials (relating particle and aggregate structure to properties); and (g) any other comparable area of fundamental engineering science or physics, such as optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics, or electronics. OR Combination of education and experience: college-level education, training, and/or technical experience that furnished (1) a thorough knowledge of the physical and mathematical sciences underlying engineering, and (2) a good understanding, both theoretical and practical, of the engineering sciences and techniques and their applications to one of the branches of engineering. There are alternate methods to meeting the engineering educational requirement (e.g., holding current professional engineering registration, having passed the EIT examination, or having completed specified academic courses or a related degree). For more information on the alternate methods, please refer to the OPM Qualification Standards for Professional Engineering Positions. If qualifying on the basis of an alternate method, i.e., professional license, you must submit official documentation to support your claim with your application package.

1301 - A. Degree: physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics OR B. Combination of education and experience: education equivalent to one of the majors shown in A above that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

Education must be obtained from an accredited institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
