What responsibilities will you have in this role? Reporting to the Dean, CCET (Centre for Construction and Engineering Technologies), the GBC Industrial Research Chair (IRC) in Mass Timber Construction (MTC) will promote the adoption of mass timber products by the construction industry through research and development, as well as specialized education in the use of advanced wood products in construction. The IRC will lead a research and education program to develop new technology and know how in partnership with the construction sector. Increase delivery of mass timber applied research solutions to the construction industry by leading a program of applied research on mass timber construction. Establish George Brown College's expertise in MTC through the establishment of a dedicated research institute; utilize construction of The Arbor as a demonstration facility during the actual construction and beyond. Identify gaps in MTC research through consultation and develop a program of applied research to bridge those gaps. Manages research team who undertake to scope work, liaise with partners to bring in projects and execute the program under the direction of the IRC. Identify partners with innovation needs that align, build relationships with stakeholders, and develop applied research. Outreach to industry; attend events, conferences, meetings and establish network within national and international mass timber construction industry. Work collaboratively with partners and research office to identify funding opportunities, develop projects, prepare proposals to secure funding. Disseminate research results, demonstration projects and industry training; facilitate regional organizations to become familiar with MTC. Update the college's curriculum in construction and trades programs to include mass timber construction and develop a new mass timber construction program. Transfer research results to faculty, students and academic managers and work with them to incorporate results of research into curriculum. Work with key internal and external stakeholders to ensure program development and planning is on-going to meet future needs of stakeholders, and that it aligns with the academic strategy, and facilitates ongoing review of existing programs to reflect changing industry needs. Increase knowledge and technology transfer between GBC and companies, with the objective of increasing productivity and competitiveness of local companies. Deliver technical reports to industry and publish research papers on IRC research. Attend and/or host local and national forums/workshops on mass timber construction technologies and trends; transfer knowledge of research findings at conferences, public webinars, forums, etc. Deliver a variety of content (workshops, webinars, website, etc.) to help building managers and facility owners adopt and optimize the use of mass timber. What qualifications do you need for this role? Master's degree in a related area (eg, Architecture, Civil Engineering, Forestry, Material Science or Environmental engineering, Construction (with a focus on sustainable materials) or wood building design and construction) or equivalent combination of education and experience. Professional designation and PhD preferred. Significant experience in the forestry or construction sector focusing on innovative methods, sustainable materials and use of mass timber. Demonstrated research record. Design and delivery of technical education to learners. Expertise in stimulating innovation, entrepreneurship and business development. Extensive knowledge of engineered wood products, related building components and structural systems. Strong leadership, collaboration, teamwork, and interpersonal skills. Proven analytical, problem-solving and exercising good judgment. Proficiency with workplace (MS-Office) and construction/design technology. Written and oral communication including technical report writing and effective presentation skills. Demonstrated leadership in delivering excellent service to others as this is key in supporting the success of our students and our College. Strong collaboration and teamwork skills. Effective ability to interact with others and deal with situations in ways that respect diverse backgrounds, experience and styles. Flexibility in adapting to change and in participating in consultative decision-making processes.
