The George Mason University Honors College provides challenge and support for Masons most highly motivated undergraduates of every background and interest. Housed within the Honors College, the Office of Fellowships raises the academic profile of Mason and its students by encouraging talented undergraduate students to explore the range of nationally competitive fellowship opportunities and resources available to advance their academic and professional goals. The Office is committed to providing a supportive and friendly environment for students with a strong focus on mentoring and cultivating academic excellence. Among the Office of Fellowships’ strategic priorities is for fellowship applicants to reflect Mason’s commitment to diversity and inclusion.

The Program Officer (PO) will be responsible for working across academic units to recruit, advise, and support students applying for prestigious fellowships and awards.

Duties include:

  • Raise campus awareness of the office by promoting fellowship opportunities through info sessions, unit visits, faculty meetings, and participation in student events and activities.
  • Manage recruitment, outreach, and program administration for the largest fellowship opportunities, such as the Fulbright US Student Program, Critical Language Scholarship, and National Science Foundation awards.
  • Assist the director of fellowships in managing workflow and serving as a liaison to the graduate personal statement specialists.
  • Support the Office of Fellowships commitment to recruit from underrepresented (first generation, minority, LGBTQ+, veteran, low-income) student populations and encourage these students’ professional development.


Required Qualifications: * Bachelors degree, or a combination of education and experience * Experience supporting/advising underrepresented student populations * Familiarity with nationally competitive scholarships and awards * An understanding of the importance of global education/study abroad in an undergraduate curriculum * Willingness to work collaboratively with a small team * Strong organizational/event planning skills * Strong writing and editing skills * Excellent public speaking skills Preferred Qualifications: * Master’s degree * Experience working across disciplines or working with students in a variety of majors, including STEM
