Job Details

Inspects, repairs or replaces specialized wastewater plant equipment. Performs corrective and emergency repairs to equipment. Specific duties include:
  • Performs as a skilled journey-level plant mechanic performing mechanical work, troubleshooting, corrective and emergency repairs to equipment in an industrial setting;
  • Troubleshoots and determines the cause of equipment failure in specialized machinery which includes starters, pumps, motors and generators;
  • Repairs various types of specialized machinery located in wastewater treatment stations;
  • Performs major and general rehabilitation and replacement repairs on fixtures and valves throughout the facility to include wastewater, sludge, hydraulics, air and water to include excavation, trenching and shoring;
  • Uses wastewater related computer software to maintain work orders, requisition parts and access an online O&M manual.
These duties are performed under the general supervision of the mechanical supervisor. Employment Standards MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, training, and experience equivalent to the following: graduation from high school, or a GED issued by a state department of education, or completion of a registered apprenticeship program and three years of experience in the maintenance and repair of pumps, motors and other wastewater equipment.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge of the methods, tools and equipment used in mechanical maintenance and repair work. Ability to observe plant equipment and determine when it is operating effectively. Ability to read and understand the following manufacturers service and repair manuals.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
A valid driver's license.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:With or without reasonable accommodation. Ability to lift 50-75 pounds in a safe and correct manner. Ability to work outside in harsh environments such as extreme heat and cold. Ability to work from elevated areas and in confined spaces. Must be able to bend, stoop and stand for prolonged periods of time.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check, a driving record check, and a pre-employment physical examination to the satisfaction of the employer. Subject to 24-hour call back and must, therefore, be able to work emergency overtime. Subject to working in adverse weather conditions and may be exposed to raw waste. This position is designated as one of the agency's emergency personnel positions, which are essential to providing uninterrupted wastewater service to citizens during inclement weather or other types of operational emergencies.
