Overview

The Manager, TRAFFIC creates, funds, manages and implements projects and initiatives related to wildlife trade monitoring and policy, and efforts to combat wildlife crime related to the US and internationally. Responsible for a suite of transformational wildlife trade and crime strategies and initiatives with multiple partners with a high degree of complexity / sensitivity. The Manager ensures programmatic synergies and forms close alliances internally and externally, sharing approaches and best practices for combating wildlife crime and engaging government and stakeholders to ensure the legal and appropriate use of wildlife resources. Communicates the nature and results of the work to interested institutions, governments, donors, partner organizations, the media and the public. Is the senior technical lead within the TRAFFIC US team, part of the Wildlife Conservation Program of WWF US.

Responsibilities

1. Strategic Vision – Sustains and grows interventions and activities to monitor wildlife trade at multiple levels and scales – within TRAFFIC and in support of the WWF US Wildlife Conservation goal team, in collaboration with other TRAFFIC and WWF goals, in support of efforts internationally. Identifies emerging wildlife trade and crime issues and develops innovative solutions to capitalize on opportunities and leverage change.
2. Fund Raising – Identifies and assists/leads programmatically on fundraising opportunities (US government, multilaterals, foundations, individuals) for projects that support wildlife trade monitoring, combating wildlife crime and related areas of biodiversity conservation.
3. Grant / Contract Management - Works with project personnel, grantees, consultants, and others to facilitate coordination, communication, and regular reporting. Develops and analyzes project operating plans including oversight of consultants and staff/interns and ensures compliance with donor requirements. As required travels to project sites to monitor, provide technical and strategic input, and evaluate project progress and to monitor wildlife trade trends, verbally and in writing.
4. Negotiations and Partnering - Identifies, assesses, and develops new strategic partnerships to add value and impact to programmatic activities through innovation and complementary expertise.
5. Technical Support - Engages across the TRAFFIC / WWF networks and WWF-US programs (e.g., forests, oceans) to maximize the impact and scale of wildlife trade monitoring, combating wildlife crime and anti-corruption approaches. Provides technical expertise, leadership and input on select efforts including engagement and information-sharing with US government agencies as well as outside organizations and stakeholders by maintaining a knowledge base in relevant technical areas. Writing / editing technical reports, preparing technical presentations and trainings, and attendance at professional and government meetings and training workshops are key elements.
6. Communication - Represents TRAFFIC and WWF-US externally on wildlife crime issues including maintaining relationships with other organizations, partners, colleagues, grantees, etc. Identifies emerging needs and opportunities for communication purposes, working closely with Marketing and Communications teams of WWF US and TRAFFIC.
7. Other - Performs other duties as assigned to high technical and professional standards.

Qualifications

• An advanced degree in a relevant field such as wildlife conservation, wildlife trade, environmental law/policy, criminology, natural resource management is required, (in exceptional circumstance other extensive specialist experience in the field of wildlife trafficking may be acceptable in lieu of an advanced degree).
• At minimum of eight years of professional experience, in wildlife crime, conservation, wildlife trade, natural resources, natural resource crime, wildlife law enforcement, environmental law and policy or a relevant field required.
• Preference for candidates with critical knowledge of wildlife trade and trafficking, conservation strategies and approaches and experience working directly in this field in the US, and/or Latin America.
• Must have excellent research, writing, analytical and communication skills.Administrative and project / staff or consultant management skills essential.
• Proven fundraising ability and a track record working with key donor institutions (e.g. USG, foundations, individual major donors, multi/bi-lateral agencies) is highly desirable.
• Strong team and interpersonal/cross-cultural/diplomatic skills required.
• Fluency in other languages is helpful, especially Spanish.
• Ability to travel domestically and internationally and work across timezones outside of normal US work hours as necessary.
