Position Information

The Public Assistance Bureau (PAB) in the Economic Independence Division of the Department of Human Services is hiring two (one bilingual)  Human Services Aides to perform a variety of technical and administrative duties in support of the bureau. PAB determines both initial and ongoing eligibility of individuals and families for a variety of complex federal, state and/or local financial assistance programs including: Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF), General Relief, Refugee Assistance, Auxiliary Grants, Medical Assistance (Medicaid), Energy Assistance, Foster Care IV-E, Child Care Subsidy, Energy Assistance, and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). The successful candidate will be detail oriented and enjoy working directly with county residents. Clients served are from a culturally diverse background, many of whom have limited English speaking ability.

Duties include:

  • Meeting with clients to determine economic needs and make referrals for resources;
  • Conducting orientation sessions for new client intake;
  • Preparing documents and intake materials for financial, medical, and food assistance programs;
  • Scanning documents for electronic filing;
  • Creating correspondence, reviewing and editing intake forms, and developing summary reports for stakeholders using Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook;
  • Utilizing local, state, and federal automated records systems to perform client queries and data entry;
  • Responding to client questions on services and programs accurately and efficiently;
  • Processing cash payments for services, investigating fraudulent payments for clients, and posting payments to ledgers;
  • Sending out receipts, reminders of payments, and payment envelopes to customers.

Selection Criteria


  • High school diploma or equivalent;
  • Two years of full time work experience providing customer service in a Human Services environment; and/or
  • Bilingual speaking ability in English/Spanish for one position.
Substitution: College coursework in a human services related field may be substituted for up to one year of experience on a year for year basis.

Desirables: Preference may be given to candidates with one or more of the following
  • Assisting clients when applying for human services related programs; and/or
  • Intermediate use of Microsoft Word, Outlook, and Excel.

Special Requirements

An assessment of oral Spanish proficiency will be required before a candidate can be appointed to the bilingual position. The incumbent in the bilingual position will receive the language pay premium on all hours worked and on paid leave hours.

The applicant must possess, or obtain by the time of appointment, a valid motor vehicle operator's license from the applicant's place of residence, or the applicant must have the ability and willingness to use alternative methods of transportation to perform assigned duties and responsibilities at locations other than the primary worksite. If the applicant possesses or acquires a license, the applicant must authorize Arlington County to obtain, or the applicant must provide a copy of the applicant's official state/district driving record. Any offer of employment may be contingent upon a favorable review of the applicant's driving record.

Additional Information

Work hours: Monday - Friday 8:00- 5:00 with some flexibility.
