The Humane Society of The United States (HSUS), the nation’s most effective animal protection organization, is seeking a Senior Graphic Designer for its Creative department.  The main responsibility of this role will be to design and produce layouts for All Animals and Animal Sheltering magazines. 

 

This position will be responsible for:

  • Designing and producing layouts, in-house advertisements, and web resources for All Animals and Animal Sheltering magazines;
  • Designing and producing layouts for Humane Activist magazine, and manage internal communications and scheduling to meet all deadlines;
  • Researching and ordering stock photography and illustrations;
  • Working with photo editors to correspond with stock photo agencies, commission illustrations, and communicating with freelance photographers to purchase printing rights for images;
  • Negotiating discounts from image vendors to minimize costs;
  • Coordinating and art directing photo-shoots, including planning, prepping, and inspiring;
  • Creating illustrations for print publications and digital projects in a variety of illustration styles, and managing communications with freelance illustrators;
  • Assisting the art director in defining and developing the All Animals and Animal Sheltering brands across print and digital spaces;
  • Defining and developing the Humane Activist brand;
  • Continually evolving the organization’s and its affiliate’s brands, and ensuring brand standards are upheld in our marketing and communications;
  • Creating designs for cross-channel projects like web pages, share graphics, and other digital resources, and collaborating with other designers on various projects across the team.   

 

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design or a related field, or equivalent work experience required;
  • Minimum of five years of design and production experience required;
  • Color correction experience preferred;
  • High-quality design knowledge including the use of sophisticated typography treatments and compelling layout composition;
  • Expert understanding of design principles, color balance, and visual weight;
  • Expert knowledge of the newest design and production software, techniques, and current trends;
  • Exceptional problem-solving skills; the ability to manage multiple and often changing priorities and issues of varying complexity, while meeting time sensitive deadlines and deliverables;
  • Attention to detail and commitment to excellence demonstrated by the delivery of quality and timely outcomes; 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication;
  • Excellent creative thinking skills with the ability to create innovative ideas;
  • Superior organization and planning skills necessary to create and maintain short and long-term schedules;
  • Keen eye for the selection of imagery that is in line with our organizational goals and brand standards;
  • Business acumen, negotiation and mediation skills, and a demonstrated attention to detail and quality-focused outcomes;
  • Ability to coordinate and provide art direction for photo shoots for a variety of projects;
  • Strong project management skills for planning and executing multiple projects and priorities;
  • Ability to work both independently and as an effective team member in a team environment;
  • Strong interest in animal protection issues desired.
