  • Basic Requirement, in order to qualify for a Mathematical Statistician, GS-1529, you must meet one of the following:
    A. have a degree that included 24 semester hours of mathematics and statistics, of which at least 12 semester hours were in mathematics and 6 semester hours were in statistics.
    OR
    B. have a combination of education and experience - at least 24 semester hours of mathematics and statistics, including at least 12 hours in mathematics and 6 hours in statistics, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

    In addition, to meeting the Basic Requirements, in order to qualify for a Mathematical Statistician at the GS-15 level, you must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-14 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: applying advanced methodologies for using statistical software packages in computing environments; applying the principles, concepts, and methods for statistical theory and methods for biomedical research, including predictive modeling, clinical trial design, laboratory and diagnostic study design to develop new theories and approaches spanning between basic, translational and clinical research; contributor to published research studies that produce advanced theories, innovative applications, new scientific principles, or new research techniques; conducting statistical studies to assess the impact of new approaches and methodologies applicable to cancer research programs.

    Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
