Position Overview: PROGRAM DESCRIPTION The Facilities Maintenance and Engineering (FME) Directorate is responsible for laboratory space, administrative space, infrastructure, campus landscape, planning, and design, and construction management at Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research. KEY ROLES/RESPONSIBILITIES Prepares designs, plans, specifications, and estimates of major mechanical installations and modifications for Physical Plants, Office Administrative Areas, Laboratory and Animal Facilities. Provides technical consultative guidance to contractors and user personnel, maintenance shops, A & E representatives and program management. Tests, inspects, and monitors work performed by subcontractors, maintenance shops, and prime contractors. Establishes specifications for the purchase of new equipment based on consultation with manufacturers and provides estimated cost, schedules, and potential suppliers. Provides technical expertise to shop and/or user personnel regarding engineering requirements and procedures for repair and operation of existing and proposed equipment and utility systems. Provides bid evaluations based on project requirements. Performs special studies and evaluations as required and prepares reports of findings. Performs other related duties as assigned by a responsible authority. Perform on-site technical inspections of equipment and systems to ensure design and specification compliance; design and evaluate major complex specifications for mechanical, HVAC/R, electrical, or architectural systems; assist other engineering personnel. Familiarity with scientific/laboratory equipment desirable. The designs and specifications for utility and equipment installation and modification, engineering theory techniques and principles. BASIC QUALIFICATIONS Possession of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college/ university according to the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) in engineering (Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education). In addition to educational requirements, a minimum of four (4) years of experience in engineering design and applications relating to utility and equipment, new construction, renovations and modifications.
