The Center for Applied Linguistics (CAL) seeks an innovative and visionary Division Director of Language Assessment for an exciting opportunity in Washington, DC to direct large-scale national and international language assessment development, evaluation, and research initiatives within culturally and linguistically diverse K-12, postsecondary, and adult education.


Serve on CAL’s Executive Leadership Team and report directly to the President and CEO.

Provide strategic leadership within the organization and lead new business development efforts related to language assessment, research, and evaluation and provide high-level direction to a wide variety of language testing and psychometric projects.

Oversee all aspects of test design, development, analysis and implementation.

Direct activities with external partners in test development efforts and provide technical guidance to diverse and highly qualified staff with experience in the areas of language assessment, educational measurement, and technology-based assessment.

Represent CAL assessment initiatives internally and externally and contribute to scholarly publications.

Oversee the work of four Directors and one Senior Director in the Language Assessment Division.


Doctoral degree (PhD/EdD) from an accredited college or university, in Language Testing, Applied Linguistics, Educational Measurement, or a related field, with a minimum of 10 years of demonstrated successful management and leadership experience in the area of language testing and research.

Experience in the following areas are also preferred: teaching English learners; teaching foreign languages to culturally and linguistically diverse populations; applied linguistics; industry-standards for assessment design; U.S. legal, regulatory and policy requirements for K-12 and adult language testing; literacy and/or content area instruction; and business development.


Demonstrated expert knowledge in language assessment as evidence by publications in peer-reviewed journals and track record of operational assessment management.

Track record in management, including quality control standards, involving multidisciplinary teams.

Ability to lead assessment initiatives resulting in the acquisition of public and private funding.

Ability to work collaboratively and effectively with CAL President and the Executive Leadership Team.

Ability to work collaboratively and effectively with clients, technical advisory committees, and other assessment stakeholders.

Outstanding skills in communicating across all levels of the organization.

Outstanding ability in building and maintaining strategic partnership relationships.

Outstanding organization, planning, and time management skills.

Strong oral, interpersonal, analytical, writing, editing, and proofreading skills.

Strong skills in client interaction.
