Position Information

Arlington County's Department of Environmental Services has a vacancy in the Transportation, Engineering and Operations (TE&O) Division for a Traffic Signal Field Technician to perform the installation, repair, and maintenance of traffic signal and street light devices throughout Arlington County. The Field Technician performs highly skilled electrical and electronic maintenance and repair work of over 300 intersections and multitude of Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) support devices.

Specific duties include:

  • Performing highly skilled work related to installation, repair, and maintenance of electrical and electronic control devices including streetlights, traffic signal devices, and equipment such as streetlight assemblies and traffic signal controllers, cabinets and associated wiring, emergency pre-empt, video, and other related equipment;
  • Reading schematics and blueprints to diagnose system problems and trouble shooting in the field, and restoring operation to streetlights that have undergone electrical/electronic equipment malfunctions or wire/cable failures, including poles and other electrical systems as necessary;
  • Conducting field inspections to determine functional level of equipment and investigating complaints regarding malfunctioning equipment, and the brightness levels of streetlights;
  • Evaluating proposed new equipment, participating in designing and constructing tests of new equipment, and installing new overhead traffic signal and streetlight equipment using aerial lift truck;
  • Inspecting and testing equipment installed by contractors and providing documented feedback to manager;
  • Conducting preventive maintenance for overhead signal, cabinet, school flasher and other ITS related devices and ensuring all safety requirements are met; and
  • Entering data into the work order system and/or asset management system, using MS Office applications and other software to generate reports and reviewing system performance data on streetlights and traffic signals.
The successful candidate will possess technical expertise in the installation, maintenance and repair of streetlight systems and other electronic control devices including traffic signal systems; have experience working in an operational environment where emergency response and teamwork is essential; and good communicational skills to facilitate customer interactions.

Selection Criteria

NOTE: This recruitment may be used to fill comparable vacancies within the Department of Environmental Services.

Minimum: Associate's Degree in Electronics/Electrical Science, plus significant experience in the installation, maintenance and repair of electronic control devices, including traffic signal and/or street light equipment.

Substitution: Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis. Additional years of relevant education may be substituted for one year of the experience requirement.

Desirables: Preference may be given to candidates with one or more of the following:

  • Training and/or experience using the National Electrical Code (NEC);
  • Experience using asset management and/or traffic management system software;
  • and/or
  • Possession of valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL).

Special Requirements

  1. Applicant must possess a valid driver's license from the applicant's place of residence.  The applicant must authorize Arlington County to obtain, or the applicant must provide a copy of the applicant's official state/district driving record.  Any offer of employment will be contingent upon a favorable review of the applicant's driving record.
  2. Applicant must obtain within six months of date of hire, a Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) Intermediate Work Zone Certificate;
  3. Applicant will be required to obtain the International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) Roadway Lighting, Level I, Traffic Signal Technician, Level I, and Traffic Signal Technician, Level II, certifications within two years of date of hire.

Additional Information

Work Hours: 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., or 12:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Availability for call-back hours is required to respond to emergency situations including traffic signal issues. Employees are also required to work alternate shifts or work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours as necessary in response to short-term departmental needs in addition to County emergencies.

Work will be performed in all types of weather conditions. The work environment includes exposure to drafts, noise, dust, grease, and traffic with extended period of standing, walking, bending, crouching, and lifting light to heavy equipment. Working heights include up to 40 feet standing in a raised bucket to repair, remove, or replace signal heads or other devices.
