  • In order to qualify for an Advanced Practice Nurse (Clinical Nurse Specialist), GS-0610-13 position, you must:

    A. Have a graduate or higher level degree in nursing from an accredited educational program in the area of expertise or specialty indicated by the position. NOTE: Degree from a Foreign Nursing School: Official certification from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools is required for individuals who graduated from foreign nursing schools.
    AND
    B. Have a current, active, full and unrestricted license, or registration as a professional nurse from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States in the clinical specialty required by the position.
    AND
    C. Have a current, active, full, and unrestricted license in one of the following clinical nurse specialties: Acute Care, Anesthesia, Community Health, Family, Geriatric, Home Health, Midwifery, Neonatal, Oncology, Pediatric, Psychiatric, Allergy and Immunology, Women's Health, Cardiovascular, Dermatology, Occupational Health, Orthopedic, or Respiratory.

    In addition, in order to qualify for an Advanced Practice Nurse (Clinical Nurse Specialist) position at the GS-0610-13 level, you must have at least 1 year of professional nursing experience equivalent to at least the GS-0610-12 level in the federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: assisting in research protocols in a clinical research environment; performing physical assessments and patient history to determine need for medical attention and testing; coordinating care for patients; reviewing and interpreting laboratory and diagnostic testing; researching trends in patient care to develop and report new approaches and methods related to patient care and research; developing briefings and presentations to other medical professionals and employees.


    Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
