The Department of Transportation offers a challenging work environment with potential assignments in a wide variety of transportation projects. We offer opportunities for flex time, alternative work schedules, telecommuting, training, and compensatory time for work beyond regular hours, plus an excellent benefits package. Serves as a traffic engineer, performing safety and operational analyses of roadways and intersections. Assists in the management of traffic issues for Fairfax, while coordinating with other county agencies and VDOT reviewers. Evaluates multi-modal traffic engineering issues and develops and studies improvement alternates. Prepares study documents and makes presentations of technical work as required. Organizes resources to ensure that projects are technically correct and completed within the project schedule. Assists in the development of a county-wide spot improvement program Reviews data and performs field investigations to identify potential spot improvement projects throughout the County. Evaluates the existing conditions at the identified locations. Develops and determines the costs, benefits and feasibility of potential improvements to the multi-modal transportation network. Develops recommendations, documents and presents findings to County staff, VDOT, the public, and other stakeholders. Ensures that work is done following VDOT and industry standards. Performs other duties as assigned.

Illustrative Duties

Depending on the functional area of assignment:

  • Performs all the duties of the Engineer II and as applicable;
  • Prepares project cost estimates and schedules for various project types;
  • Mentors and leads less experienced staff in day-to-day business or for special projects;
  • Provides project quality control for consultant designs and construction documents;
  • Manages multi-discipline projects of ranging complexity, type and scope;
  • Maintains project files and documentation;
  • Develops project scopes, budgets and schedules;
  • May serve as a Team Leader;
  • Prepares and presents reports to boards and commissions;
  • Attends meetings and conferences;
  • Prepares reports, studies, design analysis and evaluations, contracts, and bid documents.
Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities

Depending on the functional area of assignment:

  • Knowledge of the principles, theory and practice of civil, architectural, and environmental engineering or urban planning;
  • Ability to plan and coordinate the work of team(s) and/or subordinates;
  • Ability to prepare reports, specifications, and contract documents;
  • Ability to meet and interact with the public;
  • Ability to prepare technical reports and to present findings in a clear and concise format;
  • Ability to perform accurate computations and prepare neat and accurate field notes;
  • Ability to collect and compile research data;
  • Ability to use a computer for word processing, preparation of spreadsheets, e-mail, and presentation materials.
Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, training and experience equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university accredited by the Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technologies with a bachelor's degree in the appropriate engineering or architectural field; plus four years of progressively responsible professional experience in the appropriate engineering field.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
A valid driver's license.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background and driving record check to the satisfaction of the employer.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Ideal candidate will have extensive experience with traffic analysis using modeling software (Synchro, SimTraffic, Vissim, SIDRA, etc.); a broad knowledge base of transportation and traffic engineering principles and applicable regulations; ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with the public and officials on transportation issues; strong analytical and problem solving skills; excellent oral and written communications skills; ability to organize and coordinate multiple projects and assignments and establish priorities, and ability to work independently and follow through on assignments with minimal direction. P.E. and/or PTOE desirable.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Work is generally sedentary. However, employee may be required to do some walking, standing, bending, and carrying of items less than 25 pounds in weight. Conduct periodic field observations requiring standing, riding, and exposure to the elements (weather). All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
