Head of Mission (HOM) Driver - Embassy of Australia

This position is part of the Property and Transport Section of the Corporate Management and Consular Branch of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade at the Australian Embassy in Washington DC

 

This position requires commitment to after hours and weekend work.

Under close direction, the Head of Mission (HOM) Driver is primarily responsible for driving the Ambassador and VIPs. Staff occupying this position may be designated as ‘essential’ for operating status purposes.

 

The key responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to:

• Drive the Ambassador, visiting VIPs, Embassy staff and visitors as required

• Provide advice on the best travel routes and maintain knowledge of local traffic conditions, roads and key locations

• Oversee the HOM vehicle, and coordinate regular servicing, maintenance, repairs and refuelling 

• Maintain accurate HOM vehicle records, including running sheets, dispatch records  and fuel purchases • Collect and deliver supplies, correspondence and materials, and perform courier duties

• Coordinate garage parking and security, and maintain the cleanliness of vehicles • Process requests for vehicle and driver allocations

 Qualifications/Experience Essential

• Currently hold, and have held, a DC, MD or VA driver’s license for at least two years with an exemplary driving record

• Demonstrated thorough knowledge of, and experience driving in the Washington DC metro area for business purposes

• A professional demeanor, tact and courtesy of a high order including awareness of professional chauffer etiquette

• Ability to contribute effectively as a member of a small team, including proven initiative, cooperation, flexibility and reliability • An ability to perform basic vehicle maintenance functions

• Straightforward written communication skills, good oral and interpersonal communication skills, and an ability to appropriately interact with staff and VIPs

This position requires a probity check to be completed. Employment in the advertised position is dependent on the employee having or acquiring a valid DFAT probity check. Probity checks can take some time to process, and employment cannot be commenced until an appropriate check is confirmed.
