An Overview
The Alexandria Sheriff's Office in the City of Alexandria, Virginia, offers a challenging opportunity in corrections and law enforcement.  Deputy Sheriffs primarily work in a direct supervision Detention Center housing approximately 450 adult inmates.  Deputy Sheriffs manage inmate living units, handle inmate discipline, respond to inmate requests, supervise inmates, and resolve inmates problems.  Other responsibilities of Deputy Sheriffs outside the Detention Center include service of court papers; warrant execution, courthouse/courtroom security, and prisoner transportation.

The ability to work a 12.5 hour shift, during daytime or nighttime hours and during weekdays, weekends and holidays. Be physically fit. Applicants will be scheduled for a complete medical exam before being cleared by a physician to perform the duties required of a Deputy Sheriff. You will need to be flexible. There are occasions when you may be called in to report for work early or stay after your normal shift has ended. Newly hired deputies will be assigned to work inside the jail supervising male and female inmates who are committed to the jail for a variety of criminal offenses and for varying lengths of time. You will need to be a team player and have excellent communication and problem solving skills.  You will need to be able to adapt to rapidly changing situations and may need to use physical force to protect inmates or other staff from injury or death.

Major Duties (Detention Center)

All newly hired Deputy Sheriffs start their career in the William G. Truesdale Adult Detention Center. Deputies will work in the William G. Truesdale Adult Detention Center on a 12.5 hour shift of either days or nights. All shifts work approximately 15 days per month to equal 87.5 hours per two-week pay period. 

Supervision of inmate population and inmate activities to include meal service, recreation, program and work assignments

  • Maintaining control, order and security in the Detention Center
  • Manage inmate behavior and respond with appropriate discipline
  • Receives and screens visitors seeking admittance into the facility
  • Monitor and control ingress and egress onto the Public Safety Center grounds.
  • Responds to emergency incidents within the facility
  • Conduct searches of the inmate population and facility as required
  • Other duties as assigned.

Major Duties (Court Security and Civil Process)

Deputy Sheriffs who are assigned to Court Security and Civil Process work an 80 hour pay period. They are responsible for:

  • Courthouse and Courtroom Security
  • The opening process for court sessions
  • Monitoring the court while in session
  • Escort of prisoners to and from the courtroom
  • Transport of prisoners to and from the Detention Center
  • Operates the entrance screening post
  • Responds to emergency incidents within the courthouse and lockup
  • Serve civil process throughout the City of Alexandria
  • Warrant execution
  • Other duties as assigned

Major Duties (Inmate/Support Services)
Deputy Sheriffs who are assigned to Inmate/Support Services work an 84 hour pay period.  They are responsible for:
  • Supervise and conduct on-site visits to inmates assigned to the Modified Work Release Program
  • Supervise inmates assigned to the Work Detail Program
  • Responsible for facility maintenance and other duties as assigned

Major Duties (Administrative Services)
Deputy Sheriffs who are assigned to Administrative Services work an 84 hour pay period.  They are responsible for:

  • Conduct background investigations for Deputy Sheriff's applicants, civilians and contractors
  • Coordinate and conduct training for staff
  • Coordinate community relations events
  • Manage the office's fleet
  • Maintain and issue uniforms and equipment  
  • Conduct Internal Affairs investigations
  • Other duties as assigned
