Community Assistant Branch Manager (Librarian II)
Manages a community library in the absence of the branch manager. Directly supervises Information Services staff. Trains and counsels staff and evaluates their performance. Responds to the needs of library users of all ages, educational levels and cultural backgrounds at the information desk. Advises patrons of all ages on leisure reading. Makes suggestions for the collection to collection management. Conducts online searches and troubleshoots equipment as needed. May speak to community groups to market library services. Conducts tours of the branch and presents programs for adults. May conduct information department meetings. Works with departmental volunteers. Participates on management team to develop objectives and work plans for the branch. Works on system-wide projects for the enhancement of library services.
Schedule: Flexibility is imperative. The schedule includes evenings and Saturdays as assigned. The schedule may vary depending on the needs of the library.
Directly supervises adult reference and children's services within the branch;
Participates in the evaluation, development and maintenance of collection;
Trains, supervises and evaluates subordinate personnel;
Personally handles the more difficult and complex reference and reader advisory services; advises supervisor of staff development needs;
Evaluates and recommends books and materials for addition to special collections; develops and implements special subject indexes, photo archives, etc.;
Collects and evaluates reference statistics; evaluates and recommends books, periodicals and/or media for addition to adult or children's collections;
Coordinates adult or children's services within region;
Interprets and communicates Library policy to staff and general public;
Promotes and represents Library System before outside groups;
Conducts and attends staff meetings.
Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities Knowledge of professional library science;
Familiarity with the principles and practices of library administration;
General knowledge of statistics and budget preparation;
General knowledge of reference sources and material;
Ability to plan and schedule workload;
Ability to effectively train and supervise others;
Ability to promote interest in library services;
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with professional and clerical staff and with the general public.
Employment Standards MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Graduation from college and a master's degree from an accredited library school and one year of professional library experience.
CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
Possession of a certificate issued by the Virginia State Board for Certification of Librarians within three (3) months of date of appointment to the position.
Two or more years of public library experience with one or more years of experience in a supervisory capacity.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to the position will be required to complete a criminal background check and Child Protective Services Registry check to the satisfaction of the employer.
Ability to lift books weighing up to 15 pounds. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
Panel interview; may include a written and oral exercise.
