Sentara Norfolk General is hiring a Registered Nurse Specialist to support the 18 Bed Medical Oncology Program, 18 Bed Back and Neck Center, and 16 bed Inpatient Rehab Unit.

Hours/Shift: Work a day shift, 40 hours per week.

Department/Position Overview: The Nurse Specialist will be responsible for an inpatient Rehab Unit as well as Unit 6RP. Unit 6RP cares for two specific patient populations: for our oncology patients, we provide comprehensive care which includes chemotherapy, inpatient radiation, autologous stem cell transplants, symptom management and end of life care. The Nurse Specialist also is responsible for surgical back and neck patients; they are post operative patients that have required surgery to treat spinal cord injuries, deformities, pain, and tumors of the spine.

Must be certified in specialty area of department assigned at time of hire and maintain certification of specialty area of department. Advanced or specialized life support certifications required as defined by specific specialty


Formal and informal consultation to the nurse, physician and other healthcare team members, reviews quality and formulates plans to address trends and issues. Assists with the onboarding, mentoring, and coaching of nursing staff. Participates in research and leads the team in Quality or evidence based projects. Provides direct care in support of the nursing staff.

The Nurse Specialist demonstrates advanced and specialized clinical knowledge and skills to facilitate the provision of patient / family-focused care to promote health and/or well-being, improve quality of life; and enhance the profession of nursing. This individual facilitates nursing practice and care, either directly, or by influencing nurses and nursing personnel through direct care, leadership, coaching, research, ethical decision making, collaboration, and consultation.

Experience in Oncology preferred. Recent acute care preferred. CNS, NS, NC will all be considered for this position.
